Constant "Unable to enumerate folder" errors

Have build 757 on my desktop and 50% of the time when I go into Pool Options >> File Protection >> Folder Duplication I get "Unable to enumerate folder, Access is denied" errors.

A reboot usually removes it.  I have also had many issues with dealing with Security at the folder level, with out of order, etc.

I have reset the permissions on the whole pool and it seems the security issues have stopped but not the "enumerate" issue trying to set the folder duplication.

Also seem to get a lot of yellow under Pool Organization about Duplication inconsistent even though pool was green and nothing much has happened.

I do have the SSD Optimizer add-on and it is the only Balancer selected except for Scanner - default settings.

And unless I'm really blind in this build I don't see anywhere to turn on logging, clicking on the cog doesn't have the option.

Thinking about migrating my HTPC from WHS 2011 to Windows 10

Hi there!  I wanted to inquire about the process about potentially upgrading/migrating my server from Windows Home Server 2011 to Windows 10.

I'm very happy with how the StableBit products have been working with WHS2011, it has been a great Steam Mirror/Plex/File backup server for me and all of my files are protected!  However with the home server product line being discontinued and as I look towards the future, I think I may want to be proactive rather than reactive about keeping my HTPC updated and secure.  Also now that the server edition prices are much higher, I feel like I don't really use the server features all that much, so a standard home edition would be fine (mainly media streaming and file storage).

From all the reading I've done it seems like the Windows 10 support is fairly good, although I do see some bugs popping up here and there, and I guess I just wanted to get some confirmation before I did anything drastic.

  • I know it's been stated a few times, but as of today, is the latest DrivePool beta stable enough to store pictures/videos/movies/tv shows etc. on Windows 10?
  • Same question for the Scanner product, is it working well in Windows 10?
  • Is this the correct upgrade process?
    • Un-register the DrivePool / Scanner licenses on the current server
    • Install Windows 10 on the HTPC with a full wipe & clean install on the SSD hard drive (not the data HDDs)
    • Install DrivePool/Scanner on the new Windows 10 installation, the attached drives should be automatically recognized and rebuilt.
  • By "downgrading" from a server edition to a home edition, am I losing any functionality with DrivePool / Scanner?
  • Am I overlooking anything not mentioned here?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Pool down

I've been running the original Drivepool WHS2011 plugin for a few years now. There are 5 disks in my pool, and things have generally been fine... up until now.

Three drives in the pool (all Seagates!) have been reporting SMART problems recently. I've three new (non-Seagates!) ready to replace them, but one of the drives has now gone into a SMART unhealthy state (I also run Scanner). The pool now won't come up properly, and files are inaccessible. I'm trying to start a 'replace drive' operation on the unhealthy disk, but that's proving problematic. All of the total amounts for the various folders are missing in the DrivePool tab, but it does show 5 disks in the pool. Pool status is stuck at 'measuring 0.1%.

I do have backups - thankfully, but what's the best course of action? I can just pull the unhealthy drive, but that's not going to help with the pool state. I'm not sure if there's any way to do this 'cleanly'. Absolute worst case, I'm going to have the blitz the pool, add the new disks, recreate and restore, but that sounds pretty extreme.

Duplication speed

Hello,

After a second hard drive crash, I decided to duplicate some folders in the pool to prevent data loss from specific folders.

During the duplication the performance indicator in DrivePool isn't showing any activity (read / write speeds) in the pool, although it is duplicating.

When I open Stablebit scanner it shows activity on two drives, one for reading, one for writing. Like I said, it is duplicating, this isn't the problem.

What I noticed is that the duplication speed is around 45 MB/s and I think this is quite slow.

When performing file copy in for example Total Commander the disks are working on a speed between 160-200 MB/s

I found another thread in this forum about duplication speed from November 2013 where Christopher wrote that this isn't typical behavior.

Unfortunately there wasn't a clear solution to this behavior, that's why I'm posting a new topic.

Edit: I already uploaded a logfile as described here

DrivePool - Windows Store refuses to install on the pool

Works fine for any other actual device assigned a letter, but choose the drive letter that DrivePool is running on and the install button does nothing and after a few seconds it reverts back to the C drive as the option.

Tested on 561 and beta 651, same issue on both.

REFS in pool

Just noticed that Windows 10 natively supports REFS now.

What's the advantage of slowly adding REFS formatted drives to my pool?

Damaged sector on a hard drive - how to add drive back into pool?

$

I had a single damaged sector on a hard drive which was reported by Scanner during a drive check. I have ran chkdsk /r which found no other bad sectors (regarding my other question, this drive does not a SMART warning, that is another drive). I have had one or two issues with drives disappearing on that controller, so I am putting it down to that. Anyway, after running chkdsk, within Scanner I:

- Marked all Unreadable blocks Unchecked.

- Marked all Readable blocks Unchecked.

- Marked all Unchecked blocks good.

Then I removed the drive from the pool, have added it back in, re-measured but the drive isn't being utilised in DrivePool! The drive remains all in grey.

So, how after having a damaged sector on a drive, do I then add the drive back to the pool?

Thanks.

NTFS permissions on the root DrivePool - what is the Parent Object?

$

I have a DrivePool assigned to the drive letter D, and have set the NTFS security settings such that the owner is the Administrators group and the Permissions is for Everyone to have Full Control, this is applied to This folder, subfolders and files. However, if I look at the permissions of a child folder of the DrivePool, then the Owner is still the Administrators group, however the Permission is to allow Full Control to only my username, as opposed to Everyone. This permission is inherited from the "Parent Object", what is this "Parent Object", where can I change its security settings, and why aren't child folders of the DrivePool inheriting from the security settings of the DrivePool drive?

Balancing Issue / Unusable for Duplication

$

Hi,

I had 4 x 3Tb drives in a DrivePool.  All was working great, until one of the drives failed.  I replaced this drive with a 6Tb drive, so I now have 1 x 6Tb and 3 x 3Tb drives.

The 6 Tb drive has Over 4Tb 'Unusable for duplication'.  Nothing will balance to it, it is just showing as free space.  And the other three drives are now full, I cannot add to the Drive Pool at all.  There are no partitions on this drive or anything odd like that - it is a brand new drive.

I have chosen the 'reset to factory settings option in DrivePool, but it is still not balancing correctly.  What am I doing wrong?  Why is so much of the larger drive 'unusable'?

Many thanks

Just curious, I haven't installed any new software except the beta for Drivepool and now I'm running out of my 64gb of memory when I am removing a drive.

Understanding file placement

$

Hi,

I am trialing Drivepool currently and am trying to get a handle on how it places files.

For example in my initial testing (without changing defaults) I encountered many situations like this:

E:\movies\Big Buck Bunny\Big Buck Bunny.avi

F:\movies\Big Buck Bunny\Big Buck Bunny.srt

(the subtitles for a given movie were placed on a different drive to the movie itself, which will surely cause two spinups to play the movie)

I should also say I intend to use it in combination with snapraid, so any post-placement moving/balancing is unwanted.

The userguide explains balancing as  "the act of reshuffling your existing pooled files among the physical disks that are part of the pool."

Does this mean balacing is entirely separate to initial file placement?

For use with snapraid I should untick automatic balancing and also untick all the balancing plugins?

With balancing plugins disabled, what determines where new files go?

125GB of unduplicated data on a pool with file duplication.

This is a fresh installation of DrivePool, a newly created Pool, all settings are at default other than "File protection" -> "Pool File Duplication" and setting this to 2. After re-measuring, the "Pool Organisation" is marked green. No specific folders have been set to have a specific level of duplication (or not in this case), what has been stated above is the only thing that has been done. so why have I got 125GB unduplicated data?

Order of Pools in DP UI

I just had to uninstall Drive pool and reinstall (after reboot and deletion of dp folder under programdata) because it was almost locking up, UI not responsive, performance section would not update - even when files accessed and taking huge amounts of memory.(1.2GB)

All went well and backup up and running

but now my pools are in a different order

f: appears before e: in the UI

how do i re order them?

Beta after 747 have memory issues?

$

Just a quick note to say that any beta I have tried after 747 has after a few hours caused the server to die a terrible and slow death of memory exhaustion.

I do not have logs and have not bothered to mention it before as I have been to busy. But on trying most builds after 747 to see if the performance and memory issues are fixed I thought I better post since I had some time.

I have VMWare based Windows 2016, 4 Cores, 8GB RAM (now 12GB), 2 x HPE P410 smart array cards with 7 x raid 0 arrays. The I have a pool within a pool, so Pool A consists of 7 x Raid 0 disks 20TB, Pool B consists of 7 x Raid 0 Disks 20TB, Pool C consists of Pool A and Pool B duplicated.

One thing I noticed is that stablebit was checking Pool C and it was at 3% for many hours, file details changing every 5 to 10 seconds.

Hopefully you have noticed something similar, or can replicate without logs as the impact on my server is too drastic for it to run more than a few hours.

Slow writes?

Drashna, got a new one for you - and don't know if it's beta related

When I copy a 20gb mkv file from my nvme (Samsung Pro 950) to a Sandisk Extreme Pro added to the Pool as a SSD Cache (via plugin), it starts with a 1.5gb copy speed, then deteriorates to 20mb/second or less.

Just a week I go it would do this but then slow down to only 120mb/sec which I didn't notice/pay attention to.

Thinking that perhaps it was bypassing the SSD plugin and writing to a mechanical green drive, I opened up Task Manager/Performance tab and watched which drive was getting the write access - it was in fact the SSD.  So, the pool was directing the writes from the nvme to the SSD but I was still seeing very, very slow writes.

Suspecting the pool, I removed the SSD from the pool, added a letter and duplicated the exact same 20gb mkv copy from nvme to SSD.  It started at 1.5gb copy and then slowed down to 400mb/copy.

The variable is the Drivepool.  Additionally, it's something in the newest betas which I always use.  I will remove the beta and go back a month or so and retest to confirm.

It's my understanding that with the SSD cache setup, it should act like a straight copy from one drive to another and then duplicate after the copy is finished.

Additionally, I've been converting my individual green drives to REFS but in this situation neither the nvme or the SSD are REFS (I suspected the error correction function on it might slow it down - so I made sure both are NTFS).

Oh...and memory leak (:)

Duplication inconsistent!

$

I purchased all three tools yesterday and set up a pool with two new WD blue 4TB HDDs.

I've copied around 140GB to the pool so far, a subset of which is configured as "x2", but mostly non-duplicated.

I have v2.2.0.762 BETA installed (the latest as of today) as well as the latest beta of Scanner.

Scanner reports no issues at all.

I've run "Re-measure...", "Re-balance", "Re-check duplication" multiple times, and rebooted a few times as well, but Pool Organization is still yellow and the tooltip says "Duplication inconsistent"

Beta 763 still eating memory

I know you guys are working on this...but the new beta is still eating memory.  I'm running Win10x64 with 64gb of ram.  With no programs running other than Drivepool balancing, after 2 hours I'm using 58gb of ram.

Access Denied: Drivepool can't access folders

$

EDIT: Ok actually the problem could have been caused from me manually move those files from say ddrive L to F or it was caused from setting a rule on L to disallow all those file types. I just realized on drive L in the pool those folders cant be accessed at all. So that is where the issue dirves. I will play with it some more and see if i can figure it out.

L is just a cache drive (with a clouddrive and some cach files) so i may just remove it and readd the drive.

Original*****

So i have seen this twice the past 6 months or so since i got it. I recently manually copied files inside the hidden pool folder from one drive to another one (on the same pool). I copied a top level folder with many files insdie of it. After doing so, and im pretty sure it was by doing this that cuased it but havne't confirmed it, I can no longer access those folders from the POOL mounted drive. Though i can manually go into the drives and still access those folders (luckily).

When i tried to change the properties or owner i get an error. "You must have read permissions" to view the object properties or "Unable to view current owner". I am the sole computer user on the system. The first time i saw this error I was able to just change the owner to fix those access denied errors. Now i can't even do that. I tried to manually run acommand to do something similar,

ICACLS "J:\MyFiles" /INHERITANCE:e /GRANT:r <UserName>:F /T /C (from some googling). That didn't work.

I tried the StableBit utility Wss.Troubleshoot_1.0.0.165.exe to fix NTFS permissions which than attempted to set all permissions to Everyone with full control. That also said it failed.

I am at a loss of what to do. The only thing I can think of is copy all the files off the top level folder from inside the private pool folders. Delete the folder. Recreate it and manually redrag the files back in (from inside the private folder on the dirves instead of the pool).

Have you encountered anything like this? I will probably attempt to do that but wanted to get this out there incase i see it again or theres already an answer. I saw some past articles on this but mostly they said to do what I tried above.

Thanks.

Great software :) Seems to be the only thing i ever see that's a little annoying and it may just be due to me going against normal processes to copy files.
