Not Happy - "Your licence needs to be transferred"

$

I just recently moved over my Pool from my old Windows Server 2012 R2 VM, to my new Windows Server 2016 VM

I left the old fileserver on, because I need to move over a lot of other configurations and scheduled tasks etc

I moved the pool over, running the Trial on the new system. It imports perfectly, and I reboot to make sure my BitLocker Auto-Unlock is working

Then I work on getting the shares all back in order, but for some reason I can't write to any folder. Only read. Then I realize I can't on the host system either

I just spend probably 2 hours trying to figure out why the file permissions were not working right, I took ownership of around 30TB of data, which took forever.

After none of this working, I am convinced the whole thing is screwed, and my best option would be to start removing disks from the pool, formatting them and starting a new pool and moving my data over while not copying the permissions

Thats when I open DrivePool to do it, and it won't let me do anything without transferring my licence, so I do it and now everything works.

Could you guys make it say that FROM THE START, or give some kind of notification? I just reset every single permissions and wasted a whole bunch of time, when I could have just transferred the licence in about two seconds

Taking data hostage over a licence (Even though I had 29 days trial left!) is a quick way to get people to move to another solution

Removing a disk

Perhaps this isn't a much needed feature, but is there a way to remove a disk from the pool without moving data around?

I had 4x 1TB disks in the pool which I've copied to a single 4TB disk.  I want to remove the old 1TB disks from the pool without moving data onto other disks.  It seems that this isn't possible.

Ideally I could just collapse the pool without doing anything to the individual disks but I don't see that either.

Thanks.

Pool completely lost

Hi,

I've had a bit of a weird situation here hopefully someone can help with. MY brother's HP Microserver running 4 disks and just 1 pool. The server was powered off, probably by someone pulling out the power cable (don't ask). After a few weeks the server was powered back on and after the BIOS just prompted to "Enter Password". Hitting enter just said there was no bootable disk. I've rebuilt the server on to a spare disk and the other 3 disks that were part of the pool are all in RAW type and want to be formatted to be used.

If I use EaseUS data recovery I can still see the data on the disks.

I know that pulling the power cable out is ridiculous and probably the source of the issue but I can't believe it destroyed the file system on all 4 disks. I always thought my data was safe because ultimately the disks were NTFS so I had a good chance of being able to recover data if I really had to. I didn't think I'd ever lose a complete pool in one go.

My brothers server is replicated to mine but he had a few extra bits that weren't replicated.

Any ideas why this happened? I wouldn't ever remove the power cable to switch my server off but we've had a few power cuts over the years. Do I risk losing the entire pool every time?

Thanks

Balance option - Stablebit Scanner

Drashna, I have a 8TB drive about 75% full that is damaged according to Stablebit Scanner.  It has about 9,173,295 sectors that are unreadable.

If I have put the Stablebit Scanner Balancer add-in to the top, selected the options Move unduplicated and duplicated files out of damaged drives, shouldn't it automatically "remove" all data from the drive and put it on other drives?

I ask because when I select "Remove drive" it goes for about an hour then reports an error "device not accessible."

The only thing that pains me about your amazing software is this situation - removing a drive.  Usually if a drive needs removed there's something wrong with it and getting the data off of it is painful.  I can add a letter to it then manually copy it over but inevitably it gets added back to the pool because Drivepool still thinks it is (since I couldnt' remove it via Drivepool due to whatever fault that causes it to be flaky.)

Duplicating Drives - unusable for duplication

Hi everyone

I have a drive with 10TB of data duplicating with another empty drive in a Drivepool.

It's been transferring for a few days now, going between balancing and duplicating etc... Slowly filling up the second drive.

Now I've noticed approx 3.3TB of data is unusable for duplication in the pool.

Both drives are the same size (256TB CloudDrives), so there should be no shortage of storage space to duplicate.

Now I'm worried I've spent days of duplicating data, only for 1/3rd to not duplicate at all?

Will this fix itself as it continues to duplicate and balance? Or will it get to 6.7TB of data copied and stop?

New to DrivePool - Sanity Check

I am moving to DrivePool from FlexRaid for a number of reasons. I currently have 10 drives, mix of filled and empty. I have the pool up and running and am currently running the duplication and balancing. Based on what I am seeing though, I am worried I am not going to have enough space to duplicate the entire pool. Can I get a check on this? Attached is what I currently see in the pool. The unduplicated of 9.72 vs. free space of 9.48 has me concerned. Am I missing something or should I start ordering more drives?

Error adding drive to pool, "can't add the same drive twice". The pool has no drives in it.

I've been having problems for the last many weeks with DP getting seemingly stuck while duplicating. I've done more than one "clean install". Tried a beta from Chris. Nothing is working.

I just did another clean install of the release version. I've also un-hidden and renamed all the poolpart folders from the old pool, so when DP started it didn't see any existing pool. All of the drives show up as non-pooled. Every drive I try to add to the new pool I get the error "Cannot add the same disk to the pool twice".

I want to create a new pool and repopulate it with the existing files from the old pool, but I can't add any of the drives. I removed the Hidden property on all the old poolpart folders and added ".old" to the folder name. I thought that would be enough. But there seems to be some other marker/file or something on each drive making them look like they're still in a pool. But there is no pool.

thanks.

Can anyone recommend a program / procedure that will help recover from pool part?

Appreciate any responses...

Basic backup system

I am looking to purchase Drive Pool, etc.  I work on a Surface Pro 3 and an iMac.  Don't have a NAS and not sure I really want to get that complicated.  Thinking of buying a couple Seagate 8TB Expansion Drives and connecting them to a USB hub for my Surface Pro.  Then organizing all my older smaller HD's on the two new Seagate's, running a duplicate backup, one copy on each Seagate.  And doing a cloud backup as well.  I realize everyone here seems to have a NAS but wondered if this system is workable as a simple, more basic solution.  Thanks for the time.  I appreciate your opinions.

A new pool always starts off as an empty drive.

The title is taken from the user manual.

Indeed I combined 3 hard drives in my pool, but when I click on it in Windows Explorer, its empty.

I should eventually see those files appearing in the drivepool, right?

You must have seen this question a million time already, sorry about that

Help with a few questions

Hi, been using Drivepool for a number of years.

I have been using Folder duplication and setting the duplication levels on each folder manually. If i now enable Pool Duplication what will happen with the folder duplication that i have set 3x duplication?

Also i am looking at replacing a few drives. what is the best procedure without causing errors?

Add new drive to pool to create the pool folder

Turn off Drivepool services

Copy files from old Pool drive to new

Turn on drivepool serivce

remove old drive from pool

and finally is there anyway to have the lowest nested folder to be stored on the same drive rather than spread across all drives?

New drive added as drive letter instead of DB*

How to "secure" my Drivepool?

$

Hi,

I've recently suffered another drive failure, which is causing me to re-evaluate how I secure my data. This is my current set up:

- Replaceable files (media, remuxed blu-rays etc.) are stored non-duplicated on the Drivepool

- Irreplaceable files like personal photos, documents etc are duplicated, stored on a second computer, and most of it is also in the cloud.

The problem when loosing a drive with this set up is the time it takes to recover lost "replaceable" files, and a struggle to identify which items was on the failed drive. As I see it there are multiple options:

Duplicate all data in the pool

  • Unfortunately a costly solution due to need for extra drives. Provides a fast way of recovering from drive failures

Upload all data to cloud

  • Annual cost of about 99$ for my cloud providers unlimited plan. Bandwidth is not a problem, but file recovery will still take quite a lot of time.

RAID-solutions outside of Drivepool

  • Not really interested in this solution. Requires formatting to get started, still need to purchase extra drives.

--

I'm currently at about 30TB Pool, if I'm going for duplication I'd need 3 more 8tb drives, which is fairly expensive here in Norway (about 300$ per drive)

Any comments or other suggestions? What would you do?

Duplication inconsistent - tried many of the published recipes on here already

Just added two new 8TB HDD to my pool. All seemed OK before the addition.

After the addition, balancing will not start and I have a "Duplication inconsistent" message.

Here is what I have tried so far:

1) Settings -> Troubleshooting -> Reset all settings

2) chkdsk /f on all pool drives (everything was OK)

3) Ran duplication check within drivepool.

4) Multiple reboots

None of these have helped. What can I try next?

DrivePool Showing Statistics Incomplete Because of CloudDrive

$

I've been having issues for the past few days with DrivePool showing "Statistics are Incomplete" in the GUI. It seems to be the issue is the CloudDrive I have in there because it is showing "Other" where there are actually duplicated files in. In this state, duplication and balancing are not working. I checked the PoolPart folder on that drive and see all the duplicated files and folders that DrivePool has placed on there and it's been working for a couple weeks until this week.

I uninstalled CloudDrive and DrivePool and reinstalled both seeing if there was just a glitch but still no luck. I also enabled file system logging in DrivePool and had it "re-measure" but no errors in the logs that I can see. I just don't understand what could be the issue especially when I can see all the files in the PoolPart folder and it looks like it has also placed some new files over to it today and those are showing up.

I'm currently using the following application versions:

DrivePool: 2.2.0.651 BETA

CloudDrive: 1.0.0.870

OS: Windows 10 Pro

Here's a screen shot showing my current setup with the CloudDrive showing mostly other when all that's on it is the PoolPart folder and its contents.

DrivePool.UI_2017-05-31_12-34-34.png

This screen shot is showing the files and folders correctly within the PoolPart folder.

The files are about 15gb to 30gb files this is how i set up the hard drive can anybody guide me , or basically im screwed  in the way that the cache drive will fill up quick.

Drivepool duplicating to only Clouddrive..

$

Hello, I've created a CloudDrive connecting to Google Drive, then added the created disk. I would like to duplicate the existing data to just the CloudDrive (essentially creating a 1:1 physical to cloud). I enabled Duplication, then under "Balancing..." and "Drive Usage Limiter", I deselected Duplicated on all phyiscal (leaving Unduplicated checked, and on Google Drive I checked Duplicated and unchecked Unduplicated.

When I began duplicating, it's spreading it evenly across all my drives, not just the CloudDrive. Is there a setting I missed to restrict to just the CloudDrive?

Huge folder decided to unduplicated

Excuse the title typo!

My TV Shows folder which is around 6TB just decided to switch itself from 2x to 1x.

I noticed when I saw that I had over 12TB free space, and panicked that I lost a bunch of data somewhere. After looking into DrivePool, it was balancing. I waited for it to finish and it said everything was good. Checked duplication, and it was set to x1

Now I am duplicating the data again, but if I didn't notice and list a drive, I would have been toast

Any idea why it would do this?
