Disk performance not showing data

$

My Stablebit Drivepool has stopped showing data in Disk Performance, I can see that things are being written to/read from the pool but it no longer shows me the files. I've tried both the latest normal release and beta, can anyone point me at a potential issue? :)

Here is a screenshot of what I mean, the bottom right section used to tell me what files were being read/written.

Local+Cloud Best-of-both-worlds Setup

I'm using DrivePool to try and get the "best of both worlds".  This is with two different drive setups.

"Big" setup - very large external local storage with 2x data matched to a large cloud drive.

With this setup, my goal is fast local access all the time while at home, while still having slower cloud-based access when traveling.

"Light" setup - small local storage with 2x data matching to a small cloud drive.

Here I am just using the mirroring to protect against drive failure.  Though I would also like the local mirror to be useable when I am offline, such as on a plane.

--

Simply using a cloud drive with a full-size cache would probably also meet the "big" requirements, albeit without the 2x backup.

Using the cloud drive with a full-size cache also means I can't access files while offline.

However, removing drives that are active in a pool seems to be not recommended so switching from "home" to "travel" requires that I remove the external drive and cloud drives from their pools.  Then the internal "cloud drive" on local storage still is accessible.

Is anyone trying to do something similar?  I am curious what others' setups are.

Worst case, the small drive solution could instead be to use encfs over locally a synced Google Drive folder.  The large drive could then use a full-size cache on the external and failover with a rebuilt smaller internal drive cache - though I wouldn't want to do that often.

Pool Disapeared

I am experiencing a very strange situation. Pool consisting of 5 disks at the moment has disappeared, all disks are ok, 3 4tb and 2 5tb, windows disk management console reporting the two 5tb's as raw, when assigning drive letters to all of them, poolpart folders are there files are ok, 95% of the pool is duplicated, the two disks that disk Management is showing as raw under their properties are showing as NTFS which is normal, their health is ok, it is possible to use them meaning reading and writing data to them.

What am I supposed to do?

Drivepool version 2.2.0.651 beta

Force/assure one copy of a file on particular drive in pool

$

I have a rather large pool with 2X duplication on a large part of it and I have one drive in the pool that I want to be sure that one copy of the duplicated files from a particular folder is always stored on that physical drive.

That is I have these drives in the pool: (paired down from reality for brevity)

D:

E:

F:

G:

H:

and the pool is mapped to X:

Under X I have folders:

F1

F2

F3

F4

F5

and 2X duplication is on for all those folders.

I want to be sure that at least one copy of all the files and folders from F1 are stored on H:

I do not care what the distribution of the other folders are and I do not care where the second copy of the files from F1 reside.

I think what I want to do is possible but for the life of me I cannot seem to reason it out in such a way that I am sure that what I want is possible.

When files are initially written into F1 I do not much care where the first copy gets stored as long as, when duplication is complete, one copy is stored on H: in its PoolPart folder.

The reason I need this is complex but suffice to say that I have a program that REALLY does not reliably read from the pool but does read fine from a physical disk.

There is another solution where I keep the directory outside the pool but that would complicate other things.

I am hoping there is something in the balancing/file placement rules or settings that would allow me to do as I want.

Note: F1 is never more than about 10% of the size of H: and its files are dynamic but, as I said, it does not matter where the first copy gets placed as long as one copy ends up on H: after duplication completes. Also currently the pool is only about 75% full.

Thanks for any and all help and/or ideas.

Disk Management Size

In Win10 disk management, my pooled drive (D:) is showing up as 2047.97 GB, however in File Explorer it is properly showing as 4.65TB.

Is this expected behavior?

I've attached an image for reference.  The pool is made up of Disk 0,1, and 3.  Disk 4 is the pooled drive.  Disk 2 is Windows drive and not part of the pool.

Just making sure I'm doing this right....Noob question for a non-noob

Just need to make sure I understand this right and make sure I'm doing this right.

Situation:

1 WD HDD 6TB (M:) (2TB used)

1 WD HDD 6TB (U:) (1TB used)

Goal: make ONE pool (E:) with the total size of 12 TB (M:+U:) and all data from M: and U: on E:

Problem:  Both drives already have data on them that I cannot loose

Solution: I create a pool (E).  I then start MOVING (NOT copying) data from both M: and U: to E:

Once that free space is cleared on M: and U:, DrivePool will then then automatically allocate that free space from M: and U: to E:, ultimately having a total E: disk size of 12TB and used space would equal 3TB (which is M: and U: current used data)

I guess my question is i want to ensure that AFTER I've created the pool with the two drives, DrivePool will automatically allocate the new free space from the Old Drives to the new pool, correct?  Do I need any special settings to ensure this is the case?

Thanks,

Create removable disk pool

Hello,

So I finally snapped up some 4TB external drives in today's sales, and I want to use them for off site backups. To do this, I would like to bring them home, plug them into the storage server and then simply robocopy everything on. If I create a new pool solely for these disk, will drive pool 'gracefully' handle them being disconnected when I take them off site, and then reconnected every couple of weeks when they are brought home?

Thanks for the help

MKLINK problems

Setup:

Windows 10 64

physical drives in pool:

1 WD HDD 6TB (M:) (2TB used)

1 WD HDD 6TB (U:) (1TB used)

So, before i started using DP, I had no problems creating SYMLINKS and HARDLINKS to serve up to several clients on my LAN from the Windows 10 machine's pool.

However, I noticed after creating the pool, both SMYLINK /J works, but the directories on the clients disappear and reappear with no visible pattern.

If I use /H (switch for HARDLINK), then I get "The request is not supported."

Now, if I create the symlink (/H or /J) to/from  the physical drive to the hidden folder "poolPart" and run the same command, same file, everything works.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation in the software?

Thanks,

Issue removing drive from pool

I'm on the trail (converting from Drive Bender after it failed on me), and have 2 freshly formatted drives i'm playing with. I'm playing around DrivePool, added my two blank drives with no issue. Changed the drive letter of the pool using windows disk management tool. Re-started the PC, and now when i go to remove a drive i get the "The server service is not started". When i look at the ctrl+alt+delete menu, the service is there and running. I tried re-starting the service. In the services app, the stablebit drivepool service is there and running...

What am i not doing right?

Thanks,

2 Computers regularly crash

Hi,

i have two computers (servers) that run 24/7 and have the same problem.

They crash after about 2 or 3 days.

Only thing in common between those two is that both habe DrivePool 2.1.1.561 and Scanner 2.5.1.3062 on them.

Besides this, there ist not much happening on these servers. One is mainly a file server, the other run runs a accounting software.

Problems startet a few months ago about the same time. Besides windows updates, nothing was changed.

I have a few other servers running without drivepool and without problems.

One Computer has windows 8.1 running, the other windows 10.

When the computers crash, the following happens :

Remote file acces does not work anymore, trying to acces a file hangs the remote process.

You can still move the mouse and windows around.  Some running programs still work, but anything accesing the harddisk will stop the process indefinitely without any error message.

You cant shut down or reboot the computer. After a powercycle, everything works again.

I am not sure that DrivePool / Scanner is the source of the problem, but i have no other idea. I already removed antivirus software as possible problem source.

Can you give me any adive ?

Bogus "One or more drives are disconnected from the pool"

What happened was I hooked up a drive from another computer that was part of a defunct pool to this one in order to delete the partition. DrivePool on this computer somehow picked it up and now I'm getting a "One or more drives are disconnected from the pool" error on boot up. The pool in this computer is complete and healthy and only one pool is showing so I have no idea where this message is coming from. Anybody know how to fix this?

Thanks :)

Moving some large folders with duplication

I currently have a main directory called "Data" which contains subdirectories for all of my types of data, so there is one for "Movies" one for "TV Shows Etc"

I want to move some of the sub directories into a "Media" Sub directory

How will this effect duplication? Will Stablebit just know that its moved, or will it delete the duplication's and re-duplicate 10TB of Data since its all moved?

Thanks!

Not seeing Server names in remote control list?

$

Just got DrivePool up and running on my server machine. However, trying to remotely manage it from my desktop and having no luck.

I have "Allow remote control" checked on both machines, but neither displays the other machine's names in the drop down list. I've tried disabling the firewall on both machines with no luck.

Both are on the same private, local network. I also have Scanner installed on the server, and noticed that I can no longer remotely connect to that either, seems related?

Not sure what to check from here, any clues?

Edit: Got it working by manually specifying the peer in C:\Program Files\StableBit\DrivePool\RemoteControl.xml

hi i stumbled across drivepool because i have a small 32gb hdd that i had windows installed on but filled up almost instantly and was a huge pain to constantly manage so i was looking into caching my hdd with the ssd and intel has software to do this but unfortunately my motherboard is not supported i got halfway thru the setup process befor it barked at me. so i was doing some googling and came across drivepool and read that it is capable of doing this aswell but i am at a loss on how to do it. i wanted my entire drive cached read/write but when i do the drag folders into the hidden drive pool folder it will not let me add program files or windowsfolders so this will not give me a performance increase with boot times/program loads. cannot find any guides on how to setup so any help is appreciated

Data Reads slow with DrivePool & CloudDrive

$

Hello,

I've done a bit of searching and can't quite find the answer to my problem.

First off: My software versions:

CloudDrive 1.0.0.631 BETA

DrivePool 2.1.1.561

I have a Drive Pool consisting of a local Disk and a Cloud Drive.  I am using Amazon Cloud Drive (hence the 1.0.0.631 version software).

My pool is set up to duplicate everything x2...and since I have 2 devices (one local, one cloud), everything gets duplicated both locally and in the cloud.

It has worked nearly flawlessly.  I've only had a few problems during power outages where the Pool had to remeasure and re-balance.

The only persistent issue I see is when I try to access files.  If I load a folder full of music, it seems to take forever while the meta-data is pulled into the windows explorer view.

Upon further investigation, it looks like some (if not all) of the read I/O is going to Amazon Cloud Drive to pull down this information.  Since all data is fully duplicated on the local hard disk, I was wondering if there was any way for Drive Pool to "Prioritize" drive reads?  For instance, never read something from the cloud when it exists locally.

Is this possible?

Advanced Settings XML question - override only single values?

$

Hi,

I would like to enable the "DrivePool_VerifyAfterCopy" option. I was wondering if it's possible to edit a copy of the "DrivePool.Service.exe.default.config" XML file to only contain the option I want to override. That is, if I did this (removed all the other "<setting ...> ... </setting>" pairs), would the missing ones be inherited, or would it cause errors?

I'm asking because I'm a bit leery of accidentally forgetting that I had every single parameter explicitly defined in the event of a drivepool program update, and forgetting to recopy the (new) default XML and make the change again.

Thanks!

Newbie Help - Two Pools, 1to1 mirroring?

$

Hi everyone!  I've read numerous praises about SBDP, so I figured I'd give it a shot with my new media server build.  Here's what I want to do:

4x HDDs in 2 pools, one pool is for media to be accessed by the other devices in the house, the other pool is just a 1-1 backup.

I've gotten as far as making the two separate pools like this:

D: & E: = pool F:

Y: & Z: = pool G:

So I see the menus for file duplication, but can I specifically tell the software to basically copy anything that I put onto F: on G:?

Also, can I change the drive letters somewhere?  I went to do it in diskmgmt.msc, but it yelled at me so I stopped and posted here instead!

I have yet to copy any data over yet, so I'm still dealing with completely blank drives (they are already initialized and formatted, however).

Thank you in advance for any help!!

Server 2016 Compatibility

Hey Guys,

I'm trying to figure out if anyone here has tested DrivePool with Server 2016 or if StableBit has been tested on Server 2016. If they need test data, I can provide it, and remote access to retrieve information.

Edit:

Forgot to ask, if I upgrade my OS, I won't lose the data on the Pooled Drives, as long as I don't nuke any of them, correct?

Safe to rename Member Drives?

$
0
0

I'm running Drivepool on Server 2012 r2 and as I have a lot (more than 26 so far) of member drives, I'm not using drive letters for them.  I'm only using a drive letter for the pool drive and using volume names to track the drive locations in my server drive bays.  Unfortunately, I realized that I've misnamed a few of the member drives in the pool and I'd like to rename them before the problem cascades further.

Questions:

1) How is Drivepool referencing the member drives if not by drive letter?  Is it using the member volume names?

2) If I change the member volume name will drivepool recover from this cleanly or will it loose track of the member?    Should I stop the drivepool service before trying this and hope that drivepool will find the member drive with a new volume name?

Hoping there's a simple solution to this that won't require me to completely rebuild the pool.

-Anthony
