Newbie Help Please

Hi all,

I have three disks in the pool, 2 X WD Red 3TB and 1 X WD 4TB. I have my Plex server reference the pool. For some insane reason I have deleted my Pictures folder  from the pool. I have attempted to run Recuva to find the files but it's not recognizing the drives. I have realtime duplication and read striping running under the performance tab but nothing else.

Is there a way to tell which disc the pictures were on (They are labeled as D: F: & G:) or a way for Recuva to find the files.

I appreciate any help you guys can give.

DrivePool "Bypass file system filters" & CloudDrive

Quick question... so CloudDrive with encryption enabled, is that included in the "types" of programs that can cause issues with "Bypass file system filters" checked, or is that not considered an issue because the two programs are kind of built to be compatible with each other?

Basically... checked or unchecked on a DrivePool if using it to pool encrypted CloudDrives.

Ordered FIle Placement plugin overrides file placement rules

Hope someone can help. When I install the Ordered File Placement plugin, it seems that the file placement rules are not obeyed.

If I copy a file to my pooled drive V:\PERSONAL, the file is copied to the E: drive. Based on my config however, I'm expecting the file to go to my D: drive. If I then disable the Ordered File Placement balancer and try the copy again the file goes to the D: drive as expected. Based on my understanding of the config below, the balancer should respect the file placement rules.

Folder placement rule:

  • Place \PERSONAL\* on D:\ drive
  • D: drive has 10% (124 GB) free space
  • FIle%20rules.JPG

Ordered file placement balancer:

  • E:\ set to highest priority (duplicated and unduplicated files)
  • E: drive has 350 GB free
  • Balancer.JPG

Newbie Duplication Question

Hey all, quick question.

I'm new to the StableBit line of products, but so far love what I'm finding.

I purchased the bundle to get all three products.

My question is about duplication with DrivePool.

I have a bunch of mismatching sized harddrives on my server that I'm going to pool with DrivePool.

I don't want to lose any of the storage space by having duplication enabled on those physical drives... what I DO want to do is, create a new encrypted drive using CloudDrive to be the same size as the sum of all my physical drives and have DrivePool duplicate my physical drives to the newly created CloudDrive.  Is this possible?

Basically, I want to designate WHERE to save the duplicates of my physical drives.

Or should I just use some sort of backup utility to backup my physical DrivePool to my CloudDrive?

Thanks!

GPT Protective Partition

Hey guys,

A few weeks ago Scanner notified me a drive was failing. I got a replacement drive, plugged it in via USB (ran out of SATA ports), and added it to the pool and removed the failing drive from the pool. Drivepool did its thing and all was well.

Last week I moved the drive from the external USB case to my 8 bay hot swap tower connected via eSATA to my computer. Did it with the power off, and when it powered on, the disk initialized, thought all was well but I didn't verify the data was still there.

Last night I got a notification that a good amount of data was missing. I went in and noticed the HDD I replaced was missing in Drivepool. Went into Disk Management and noticed the drive is now a 2048gb GPT Protective Partition with 1678 unallocated. This is not how I had setup the disk obviously.

I can't change any settings on the disk as all options are greyed out. This is the first time this has ever happened. I've added 4 drives over the year to this pool with zero issues.

I read this thread: http://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/1774-gpt-protective-partition/?hl=protectiveand their issue was software but I'm not running the same software. These are the only apps that should be accessing the drive.

AV: Avast Free

Backups: Crashplan and Arq. Arq hasn't touched the pool that the drive was on though.

Using DrivePool Drives without Software

$

Hello together,

I think about moving from Pool HD to DrivePool. But before I transfer all data and change the software I am wondering how the drives look on a computer without the DrivePool Software. Background is, that I take my pooled Drives with the case sometimes to a friend to exchange files. Now he obviously doesnt have the software. With Pool HD I was still able to access all files normally (even if they were hidden). Is that also possible with DrivePool?

Thanks in advance! :)

I have ubuntu server and i plan to install windows server 2012 on separate ssd using the same motherboard

Whats the fastest way to do this if i want to minimize downtime?

I plan to convert them all to NTFS first because ubuntu can still read NTFS..

Can drivepool read the result after that?

File Distribution Not Opitimal?

Hello running BETA 2.2.0.651, Windows 10 64bit. I have a question about the Pool Organization bar. It is currently Green and not quite completely full. When I hover over it I see "File Distribution Not Optimal". The little up arrow at the end gives me "Re-balance". I have tried that several times and it runs for a very long time but when it finishes it states the same on hover. I am currently doing full Pool duplication at 2x. And I have these plugins installed: Ordered File Placement, StableBit Scanner, Prevent Dive Overfill, and Duplication Space Optimizer in that order. Thanks for any guidance as to what I can do to fix this issue, if it is one. :)

Remove Drive without Duplicate

Is there a way I can just remove my drives, without any duplication to happen.

I recently update my server to windows 10. I am experiencing some weird behavior where it just seems to lock up from time to time. I haven't been able to track down the reason, and decided I just want to do a fresh install of the OS.

In addition to that I wanted to just recreate my DrivePool, meaning not have Drivepool recognize the existing pool. When I try to remove a drive, not matter what settings I have it is trying to move files to other drives.

How can I go about getting a fresh start on the new OS?

Do I just move all data folders out of the PoolPart folder to a root folder on the drive and then delete the PoolPart folder?

What the heck is Drivepool doing??

I removed a disk from a server that was part of a now defunct pool. I put it in another server and immediately format it. i verify it's empty. then I open Drivepool to add this disk to the current pool and it doesn't show up under available disks. drivepool is "checking". I then look at the disk again and it has a poolpart file on it. This disk has never been a part of this pool and was reformated so why the heck is Drivepool even monkeying with this disk at all??

OK, "checking is completed and said drive isn't showing anywhere in Drivepool. Windows sees it just fine and the disk is in perfect health. So, my question are -

1. Why the heck did Drivepool put a diskpart file on this drive (size is 0KB) ?

2. Why is this drive not showing up in Drivepool ??

TIA

Specify a disk to always read from

Hi,

I have a drive pool with a local, and a cloud drive in it.  I have duplication set to 2x, so it's basically a mirrored setup.

Is there a way I can set it so that ALL reading will be done off the local disk? I want to do this, because reading off of the cloud drive, while I have all the data locally doesn't make sense, and even though it's striping, it's still slower than just reading it all off the local disk...

Any thoughts about this?

Thanks

Server 2016 Essentials Support

Hey all.

So it's out, and I've got it, but I figured I'd better check for Drivepool Support. Looking at the 'Roadmaps'  and 'Development' threads I see no mention of Server 2016.

So is support for 2016 on the roadmap at all?

Archive drive - keeps getting filled then emptied

I have 12 disks in a pool Drive 2 (14_Blue) has strange behaviour in that it either has no files on it with the two arrow markers at position zero (left side) of the bar or it gets filled up as you would expect - then on the next balance it gets emptied.

Capture4.JPG

The drive is not new to the pool - one of the original disks to create the pool

balancing rules all look ok with the disk in the middle of all lists

1) Order file placement - position 5 out of 12

2) Drive usage limiter - position 2

I have no file placement rules set

Minimal duplication (couple of folders as a test) as filling up the pool at the moment

Only exception is the SSD Optimiser which has it second to last - Question - why is this list not in order like every other list of drives????????

List of Plugins and order

Capture.JPG

Its almost (but not quite) acting like a SSD drive - although its set as an archive drive - its the same size as 13_Blue-16_Blue - on the same controller for all archive drives

As far as i can see its should be acting like an archive drive

Any ideas????????????

Huge problem cannot delete Poolpart Volume Information files

Hello,

I've quite an issue here.

I installed DrivePool but I had some issues with the drive, so I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but now I had multiple Poolpart files on the drive.

So I tried do delete it, did not work, then I used the tool unlocker moved it into the recycle bin the bad thing is, the files are stuck there. I cannot delete or restore them.

I renamed one file didn't work either.

Even after I formatted the drive the files are still there.

What shall I do please help me.

REFS..What do I need to know?

$

So I have my server migrated to 2016E and I'm contemplating shuffling my pool around and reformatting my drives as REFS with integrity streams on.. I know I've seen Drashna post somewhere that his pool is using REFS now, so I'm assuming that development is far enough along to be fairly stable. My server is primarily a media and backup server, and the data integrity stuff REFS should provide would be a major plus. I'm just wondering which build version of DP I should use, as well as any caveats I should know about before making the move(especially if there are any drastic hits to performance VS 64K NTFS) Also on the same note, one of the few services I haven't set up yet on the server is WSUS. I have run the content store on the pool before with success, but was wondering if that would still be possible with REFS as the underlying filesystem of the drives since WSUS requires an NTFS formatted partition.

Thanks in advance to Drashna and anyone else who can provide some input!

Edit: I should also note that my network is 10Gb capable, and although I'm not quite maxing it out, I am taxing it a bit at times, so read performance is quite important, write not quite as much since I'll be adding a few SSD's for cache before too long.

Email notifications not working

A drive dropped out of the Pool and it took some time until I discovered this. I expected to get an email, but didn't receive one.

How ist the email send? How can I test, whether email notications work (e.g. "Test notification" button)?

Drivepool Read Striping w/ Multiple CloudDrives (Google Drive + ACD + Whatever)

$

Ooops, I intended to post this in the CloudDrive forum, but I guess I'll keep the text here anyways.

First off, I want to say that this is an amazing product. I've been tinkering around with it for the past month and while I've had to recreate my drives a bunch of times, the possibility of encrypted attached cloud storage is awesome.

So here's my question. I've been hitting the same Google Drive throttling and API call limitations that has been reported by others. I'm wondering if I can use Drivepool's duplication to create read striping across multiple cloud providers. The intent is that when the pool is accessed, it'll draw the bits from any cloud provider that can currently serve at the highest download rate. I have an assumption that different cloud services will be inaccessible at random times, so I want to maintain the best uptime by spreading out the access.

Will this setup work? I'm basically trying to create a cloud NAS to consolidate my drives until I get around to building an actual NAS.

I looked and found a topic similar to mine here. I have tried performing what the OP did and it seemed successful, but I still see the folders show up when the DrivePool is checking. Any ideas how to find where these files are?

This may be unrelated, but I am also trying to remove a drive that is showing some SMART problems. It errors saying "Error Removing Drive. The directory name is invalid."

Randomly lost duplication

I was moving around 10GB of files in my TV Shows folder, when I noticed my available free space increasing from 4TB to around 8TB

I franticly searched for any files I had lost, only to see they were all there. I went into my Fileserver VM with Stablebit Drivepool and noticed it was "Balancing" and that my entire 4.7TB TV Show folder was not unduplicated leaving my files unprotected

I re-mesured the pool to see if it would correct itself, but it just continued with balancing. I went into the duplication settings and found my TV Shows folder was now set to 1x instead of 2x like it should be

Is there any way I can find out what happened? I now have over 500GB of data sitting on a drive marked for ONLY duplicated files (Since its a 3TB Seagate with almost 4 years power-on time) while I wait for it to duplicate 4TB of data for no reason

If I lose that drive while its duplicating, Stablebit Drivepool will have completely failed me. Obviously I have backups, but it will be a total pain to restore all that data

I have been running Drivepool for around 3 years now with no real problem, but if this because a frequent event then it will concern me

Thanks

Delete duplicated files - cannot find them.

So to start I have duplication disabled.

But I started my computer had not all drives connected to the pool, so I connected them and suddenly Drive Pool started to balance the drive and more important started duplicating the files.

I aborted the process now Drive Pool says duplication is inconsistent.

So how can I get rid of the duplicated files?

I cannot find them.

Best regards.
