Chris

Was testing and ran into the warning below

Capture2.PNG

Capture.PNG

Under stand what it is as...

Capture3.PNG

but only two drives in the pool

Now as metadata is meaning less how do i find the extra copy - also there are no options to delete the "third" copy

I think it was already duplicated prior to turning dup on - so why would it try to duplicate it again??

dont care about the data as its just for testing purposes

perc H310 with drivepool IT or leave it as it is

Hi,

So adding one more gadget, i just ordered a perc H310 from ebay to give me access to more SATA drives in my dell t20. It seems everywhere i read, this is being discussed with flashing to the LSI 9211 IT mode, mostly though for freenas. I am running a win 2012 r2 essentials and drivepool. Do i gain in reliability or speed in flashing to the IT mode (vs the risks that i goof up while doing all those DOS boots) or should i leave it as it is with the dell firmware?

Does drivepool handle one better than the other? (Dell vs lsi IT)

Somewhere else i read that in this IT mode, drives dont get parked and that could be an issue (i have three HGST drives currently). To avoid it i have to do another bunch of steps to allow that or that i should leave the card in IR mode. Does leaving the dell Perc H310 with the dell firmware keep it in IR mode (i am a newbie, and despite reading the servethehome writeups, i just dont get what the IR mode actually is).

thank you for reading and answering.

Is it possible to combine hard drives of multiple servers into one with DrivePool?

WSE 2012R2, Win Updates + New Drive = WSE Mgt Services stopping

Odd one.

I did some WSE2012R2 Maintenance (Oct rollup patches) and added a new drive to the pool.  I noticed that the Users and Devices in the WSE Dashboad were blank when run on the server I I could not Sign In from a PC at all.  On checking, the WSE Mgt Services was not running.  I could start it but it would stop again.

Tried the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Data\DevicesInfo.bak --> C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Data\DevicesInfo.xml but that did not work.  In the end I had to do a "run wbadmin delete catalog" and then resetup the Server Backup from the Dashboard.

Seems OK again.

Thanks

Nathan

New files marked as "Other" until manual remeasure?

$

I'm using Stablebit Drivepool 64 (non-beta) on Win 64 with the SSD optimizer.  (Great product by the way!)  I've got a single SSD for the optimizer and 5 archive drives.

I'm running into an issue where files copied into the pool are properly being written to the SSD but they are marked as grey "Other" files.  (Note - these files are copied into the pool, not directly onto the SSD.) Because these are other files, the automatic balance doesn't trigger and they just sit on the SSD.  A manual remeasure will properly turns these grey "Other" files on the SSD into light blue unduplicated files and properly triggers the balancer.

Any help on why this is occurring, and how I can have the files copied into the pool properly marked as light blue unduplicated files rather than "Other" files?  Thanks in advance!

Feature Request - Caching?

Drashna, I've been using your products happily since switching from Drive Bender about 2 years ago.

I have 30 drives in a single pool (about 100TB).

Most of us who are using this product likely have Green drives (5400rpm) instead of the faster ones.

And, I know that I can set an SSD up to speed up writing to my pool (files moved to the pool are written on the SSD then later balanced out to the pool).

But...when it comes to reading stuff it's not as fast as I'd like.  First, it's likely the drive speed.  Second, the drives likely spin down and go to sleep.

I'm not a programmer but is there a way to (much like Windows Superfetch) identify those directories that are often accessed and cache them in some fashion that would expedite read access?  And...I've changed my power settings in my device manager for each drive to ensure they don't power down/spin down but inevitably it seems as if I'm waking a drive up just to get data.

Hardware suggestions?

I'm looking for at a minimum a 24-port card that will allow me to connect 6 SFF8087 cables.

My challenge, it seems, is PCI lanes despite having an X99 mobo.  When I disconnect one of my two RAID cards my Samsung 950pro operates at peak.  If both are plugged in, I find it drops to a mere 60mb read/write (slower than my storage drives).

Thus, I'm interesting in combining my 8 and 16 port cards into one single card.

Thanks in advance.

SAS Expanders - a few questions

Looking for some user experience

Has anybody had any experience with the following SAS expanders i have my eye on?

Microsemi (Adaptec) - 82885T (2283400) - http://storage.microsemi.com/en-us/support/sas/sas/aec-82885t/

or the

Intel RES2CV360/240 http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/servers/raid/raid-expander-res2cv.html

So after good or bad experinces....

1) what raid card did you connect the expanders to

2) what throughput do you get when using multiple HDD/SSD - anything close to the bandwidth claimed?

3) If not connected to same make of RAID card - could you update the bios on the intel or not?

4) Do you have either working in WIn 10 PRO 64bit - any issues - does Windows see the expanders i believe it should

Finally a bit confused with the cable directions

do you use forward or reverse breakout cables from the expander to the HDD?

and also are there any issues with the Adaptec and cables from miniSAS (8087) to miniSAS HD (8643) - i assume these are bi directional?

Lost of questions :) - just been burnt with Highpoint controllers not working together so want to get it right this time

Thanks

File placement based on folder

$

Hi, im trying to figure out if its possible to make a rule so that folders and all files in the subfolders are placed on the same Hard drive together instead of each file in a folder placed on random hard drives. Ie

C:\

     Folder 1

     Folder 2

         Folder A

         Folder B

     Folder 3

         Folder C

In the example above all the files in Folder A will be placed on the same HD(doesn't matter which but all together). Folder B files all on the same HD. etc etc

Reason for this is if I have a HD failure instead of missing random files from random folders its a lot easier for me to say "ok Folder A is gone and needs to be restored"

Question regarding SSD Optimizer.

Quick Question regarding using SSDs as a cache. What happens when 2 (or multiple people) copy files that are individually smaller than the SSD, but combine to be bigger. For example, assuming I'm using a 500GB SSD as a cache, and 2 people each simultaneously copy a 300GB file, what happens?

Deleted data, able to copy in pool parts?

While I am not sure why, I got hit with duplication inconsistent.  It showed a unduplicated (dark blue) over all of the drives, small amounts on each.  I had a 4 TB drive and I removed it and told it to duplicate later due to not wanting to wait and I needed the drive.  This may have been a bad idea, either way I would have thought it would at least move/duplicate the unduplicated items.

It appears it just removed the disk, didn't move off anything and then in the logs it looks like it just deleted everything off the disk.  It left about 200 GB of stuff behind on the disk, in the logs it says it was unable to delete everything.  Before removing the disk I had about 6TB of free space on the pool after removing the disk I had 4.9 free. (math doesn't work).  I do not know everything that was deleted as of yet, just that it does appear to be quite a lot.

I tried to do a "recheck duplication" but it would never actually do anything.  I restarted the service but it is going on half an hour now and it is not back up.  I appreciate people have used the software with success but so far i've had nothing but problems between this, unduplicated other, drives being evac'ed for no reason and the list goes on.  While I agree it could be the hardware this box has never had any problems prior to using Drivepool.  So I think, unfortunately as much as I wanted to love it, it is my time to part.  But that being said I need to try to get my stuff back, start the long process of moving everything and then abandon ship.

I downloaded Recuva and it found all of the stuff that is no long in the pool, would it be possible to recover the disk assuming it will and then add it back to the pool?  Any better way of getting the stuff back on the disk that anyone knows?

Remove Disk "Access Denied"

Hello

I'm using DrivePooler since a couple of years.

Still I run Windows Server Essentinal 2012R2 with DrivePooler "StableBit.DrivePool_2.2.0.727_x64_BETA".

I want to remove a Disk from the Pool to replace it with a bigger one.

The last times I did it, I moved all folders in the hidden DrivePool folder to a temporary folder on the same drive.

This did go well now.

But now I if try to remove the disk from the Pool I get an error Message.

Error removing Drive "Access Died".

I tried with force but still the same problem.

Can someone tell me what’s wrong?

Regard

Disk Performance Graphics

Hi

i am curious what the Disk Performance area of the DP ui is trying to tell me

when copying data to the pool over the network i can see files being added to the pool and the upload/download speeds etc

But what do the colours mean?

Also if you have a large file the thin line below the file path appears to go backwards and forward and then settles on a full 100% width - again not sure what this is trying to telling me

Has there been any improvement on the EFS support? I only see it mentioned a long time ago and that balancing and duplication were not supported, maybe this is supported now?

SSD - Over provisioning

$

I am going to over provision my SSD especially as they are being used as CACHE drives and as such will get used more then the average pool drive

So - i can do this directly on the drive using diskpart etc

Just curious if i did this while the drive was part of the pool (assuming it not being written to etc) - is DP going to be ok with a drive "suddenly" getting smaller by 10% or will it not care?

I am going to do it the sensible way (stop the services) before doing the 10% trim

I would guess it will be fine as i have pulled a few drives between reboots and it does not have a major strop

Is there a way to firewall protect the drives

$

I have the drives in an external Probox setup, and I was wondering if there was any way to protect them from attacks such as ransomware? I have antivirus, anti malware, etc., and windows firewall, but what I was thinking is a way to firewall the programs that access to the drives. The data on the drivepool drives is only media that has a select group of programs that use it.

Is it possible to create two or more pools , with different hard drives of course, under the same license at the same machine?
