'Bypass File System Filters' option compatible with Bitlocker?

$

The popup help tooltip for this options suggests that it may be incompatible with certain filter drivers such as those that deal with disk encryption.

I was planning on enabling Bitlocker on my pooled drives, does anyone know if enabling this setting could cause a problem?

Configuring DrivePool

Hello...

I initially configured the pool by simply adding empty drives and everything was kosher.  I managed to copy over some folders without incident.  I then came across snapraid.

So I started over, I simply deleted the drive volumes and this time recreated the pool via folder mount points.

Hardware:

2x3TB

2x4TB

Pool setup:

1x3TB

1x3TB

1x4TB

HDD1 is mounted to C:\DrivePoolArray\DRU1

HDD2 is mounted to C:\DrivePoolArray\DRU2

HDD3 is mounted to C:\DrivePoolArray\DRU3

Snapraid:

1x4TB is mounted physically using the root of the drive via drive letter P and aptly named PRU1.

I then proceeded to "robocopy" the media content from my backup drives to the pool.  Robocopy is used so that I can preserve the file/folder attributes.

I opened up the pool via drive V and noticed nothing is being displayed.  However If I unhide protected files/folder:

V:\HD

After reading some other posts I confirmed that the "HD" or the newly created media folder is present.

C:\DrivePoolArray\DRU1\PoolPart.7a5d0861-96f9-464a-8ca7-466e49655823\HD

Please note that if I use Windows Explorer to explore the "DrivePool V:" I can freely create and delete files and folders etc.

If I revert back to simply adding the physical drives to the pool without using foder mounts, everything is as it should be - I can use Robocopy to copy the various media folders without issue - no need to unhide anything.

I only decided to mount via the folder method as it seems to be the defacto when reading through the posts/forums.

As for snapraid, I have it configured as it should but I don't see how it can be causing this issue.

Please note that I have disabled all the balancing and reset all settings via the troubleshooter of Drivepool.

Any way of unhiding the HD folder so that I can stream via Plex to the various smart devices?

Or (which I'm sure) missed a critical step or two?

Thanks

Addendum...

Ok, I have defaulted the application and have recreated the drivepool every which way I could including formatting all the drives individually and creating new pools but I cannot figure out for the life of me as to why the media folder or any other folder would eventually be hidden.  Apologies as I'm a bit flustered after spending numerous hours on this!   :(

Addendum #2....

As taken from the stablebit website:

When you copy a new file to the pool, StableBit DrivePool automatically picks one or more drives from the ones that you've added to the pool to store that new file. The file will be stored in a hidden folder on those drives.

Apologies but my logic is failing me as I can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that pooling drives should allow me to "advertise" the folders and not hide them i.e. how will Plex and my SmartTV work if the folders of interest are hidden?

Again, thank you.

Files show at command prompt but not in Explorer

Hm.  Have been using DrivePool for 3+ years pretty successfully.

System Win 7 x64 Sp1.

DP ver 2.2.0.651 Beta

No recent system updates (win auto update is off)

No special user permissions on files, and none have the hidden attribute set.

Explorer options are set to show me everything--hidden files, system files, extensions, yadda, yadda

I ran the following command in a batch file from a command prompt to move files from a set of subirectories up to their parent;

For /R "Photo" %%F In ("*.jpg") Do If Not Exist "Photo\%%~nxF" move "%%F" "Photo\%%~nxF"

I ran this and got log messages saying each file was moved, but when I looked in Explorer, the parent folder is empty (<scared>), nor in the subdirectories.  However, if at a command prompt I do a dir in the parent folder I do see the files.

I tried rebooting but that did not make the files appear.

Any ideas on how to get the files to appear?

I routinely do a lot of file manipulation in both bat files and the GUI and this seems to be the first time this has happened.  Any idea why?  About the only difference here is when I do FOR it is usually not with the /R switch.

Cheers,

David

I've reinstalled WHS 2011 from scratch, installed Drivepool (version 1,xx) but it will not accept my license.

I've sent a support ticket(no reply yet) but wondering if anyone on here knows why it is not accepting the license?

Server 2016 support?

Now that Server 2016 is generally available, I was wondering if DrivePool and Scanner are compatible with it. I'm currently running both on Server 2012 R2 but feel the need to upgrade to 2016 (yes, I know there is no good reason to but I really want to have the new shiny toy).

The duplication % does not make any sense unless there is some other process that happens after the dup is initially completed - re verification perhaps?

Also the % jumped to 14% almost instantly at the start when no duplication existed

If there are several phases would it be better to say 47.8% complete for phase 2 of 4 etc

Ok so I own Stablebit Drive Pool (SDP) and love it.. does what it is suppose to. I have been holding of for almost a year to do a new machine and get things rolling and now that time is here.

Upon messing around I see there is the ability to add drive pools in the server os..

can you list out the benefit of SDP over the internal pool?

Like said I own it and going to install it but curious on what I am getting over the server os one. and may help others in the future!

If there a reason we cant select a group of directories and change the duplication level within the same hierarchy level of the folder structure?

I have set some folders to be 3x but the pie chart does not show any indication visually that things are progressing not does the disk bars - they are as the % complete is changing

Moving Windows 10 apps to a drivepooled drive

$

I have a situation where my SDD boot drive is a bit tool small to store my windows app games.  I recently got a copy of gear of war 4 and it will not fit on my drive c bit I do keep my games and windows programs stored on my drive H (drive pooled drive).  It has worked great until I ran into this problem.  When I select drive H to store my windows apps on it will ALWAYS resent to drive c.  I can successfully select drive d or drive e ( the 2 physical drivepool drives) and it will keep that setting.  It will not keep the setting for the pooled drive H.

Has anyone found a solution to this issue yet?  Any help would be appreciated...

Hello guys, all your products are just amazing!

Do you have any plans on integrating the encryption used in CloudDrive into DrivePool? Would be really nice if we can get rid of BitLocker.

Thanks!

Drivepool and Linux - what are my options?

$

Hi there,

Have been using Drivepool for ages and couldn't be happier with it.

However - I have been looking at Linux, recently, and was thinking my Server over from Windows 10.

What are my options?

1. Is there any possible (and reasonable) way to keep on using DP on a Linux system?

2. If not, are there any Linux programs that come close to what DP offers?  My initial research has yet to really find anything.

If I do switch over to Linux, my current DP licence will not be wasted as I will still have a Desktop PC that can use it.

However, the apparent lack of any decent drivepooling software on Linux is the only thing preventing me from having a go with Linux.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Drives dropping out and will not stay connected

$

Hi all. Longtime reader, first time poster :-)

My server developed a problem last week where it is constantly dropping drives and I can not get the pool measured to completion to figure out what is causing the problem. I've always had an issue with occasional dropped drive but it's always been a momentary thing and corrected itself immediately but this time it's numerous drives that are falling from the pool.

After some research it seems that the most common things that can cause this are the controller going bad, cables, power supply or damaged drives. I'm not getting any SMART errors showing on the scanner but it's also getting constantly interrupted by the drops. I don't seem to have lost any data so I'm thinking it's not a drive issue. I've checked all my cables to make sure that nothing came loose and have ordered some replacements to eliminate that. Now I'm looking into the controller and power supply. I've checked my event logs and the only errors I'm seeing is the drives becoming unavailable.

I have a question about changing the HBA controller. Right now I have two Supermicro AOC-SALSP-MV8 feeding 16 - 4 to 6TB HGST NAS drives and another 4 drives on the motherboard. From what I have been reading it's common to experience dropped drives with these cards so even though I've been running these for a few years without issue, I'm leaning towards that being the main culprit.

If I were to swap these out for something along the lines of a LSI - 9201-16i, can I just pull the old cards and plug the current drives in to the new cards without running the risk of losing anything? I only have two PCI-e 16x slots on the board so something is going to have to come out.

Any help would be appreciated!

Simultaneous mass NTFS corruption: 2 Pools (2 pairs of 2 drives in 4 drive USB chassis...)

$

Just sharing the mini-nightmare I experienced this week, in case y'all have any recommendations:

  • I have an IcyDock external 4 drive JBOD array, running SATA disks over its single USB interface because it is connected to an Intel NUC with no eSATA ports (there's one SATA connected to an external BluRay drive).

  • I have a UPS and the array has been running for months with no problems.

  • Early yesterday I had some USB device errors (keyboard or something) and accidentally pull the array's USB cable. Plugged it back in and everything seemed fine ... but not for long.

  • After a reboot, all 4 drives in the array came up with their NTFS partitions marked as "RAW". Geesh! I thought NTFS was more tolerant to a little glitch than that!

  • I felt some comfort that because I had DrivePool with full duplication enabled, I would have two opportunities to recover the data. I purchased "GetDataBack Simple" for this purpose. It recovered most of the folders and files intact, though a few folders lost their names and proper locations in the tree. I recovered by writing to a pair of larger external USB drives already connected to the PC.

So... Now I have to put my array back together again... But am rethinking the layout:

  1. Since a "hiccup" on the one USB cable and/or chassis has proven that it can destroy both supposedly independent NTFS file systems, obviously one duplicate of each drive should be on a different USB bus ... either a separate chassis or independent external drives.

  2. The 4 chassis drives are 1tb each and I have a pair of 3tb external drives. So my plan is to partition the 3tb drives into 3 (1tb, 1tb, and slightly under 1tb), and pair up chassis drive to each partition. But wait ... that doesn't quite balance out!

  3. So I guess I could create 1 or 2 Pools and just create balancing rules that ensure all duplicates span across the total of USB ports (1 chassis USB with 4 drives + 2 external USB drives)?

Question:

  • Is it possible for a partition (a single NTFS "drive") to belong to more than one Pool? The 3tb drives, for example, could then belong to 1 Pool for mirroring 2 of the chassis disks each, and also belong to a separate Pool to duplicate each other?

  • Of course... I can do the above with partitioning, but since DrivePool uses a top-level NTFS Folder to hold the pooled data, can't it just have 2 (or more!) folders on each single partition, one such folder for each pool the partition belongs to?

Thanks for indulging my insanity. DrivePool is a powerful product, so there's bound to be several bad ways and a couple good ways to handle this.

I'm presuming that DrivePool itself didn't play any role in the simultaneous NTFS corruption ... but let me know if that is not a safe assumption.

Help with Settings

Hello, I have been using DrivePool for a month or so as merely a way to pool my drives together. And have been using Snapraid as my backup solution. However, I lost a drive and since some of the files on other hard drives had been changed; Snapraid was only able to rebuild 3/4 of the data on the 5TB drive. So I am thinking of switching over to DrivePool and at least 2x Duplication. With my recent experience still fresh in my mind, I am a little gunshy and want to be sure everything looks correct before I pull the trigger on the duplication as I do not have backups of my data at the moment. Yikes!! Please let me know if I have something off or can offer any advice in my situation. Thank you so much.

Pool details:

  • 59.6 TB Total
  • 28.4 TB Unduplicated
  • 31.1 TB Free
  • 23.6 GB Other
  • 20 Drives of various sizes

I have more empty drives I can add to the Pool if needed, just didn't know if I should include them now or as needed?

Settings details:

  • Performance
    • ON - Real-time duplication
    • ON - Read striping
    • ON - Network I/O boost
  • File protection - OFF currently but want to enable 2x duplication at least
  • Balancing
    • ON - Balance immediately
    • Balancing Settings Tab
      • Balance if ratio falls below 90%
      • ON - Or if at least this much data needs to be moved 10 GB
      • ON - Allow balancing plug-ins to force immediate balancing
      • ON - File placement rules respect real-time file placement limits set by the balancing plug-ins
      • ON - Balancing plug-ins respect file placement rules
        • ON - Unless the drive is being emptied
    • Balancing Balancers Tab
      • OFF - Stablebit Scanner (thinking of adding once everything is up and running)
      • OFF - Volume Equalization
      • ON - Prevent Drive Overfill (95% full or 95 GB free)
      • OFF - Drive Usage Limiter
      • ON - Duplication Space Optimizer
      • ON - Ordered File Placement
    • Balancing File Placement Tab - Left as default for now

Drive Failure & Stablebit Updates

$

0

Hey guys,

I'm currently trying add/replace another drive to my as my current drives are 3-4 years old and getting to the point of potential failure, despite Stablebit Scanner saying nothing. (Just me being paranoid and thinking ahead).

Now, I've added, and removed drives before without any issues but what are the best practices for drive failure to get everything back and running. Current pool is

1x 4TB

1x 3TB

2x 2TB

All at 2x Duplication, so 3.83TB left free of 10TB Pool. Anything I should do/tweak ahead of time?

Also, I know y'all are working on getting CloudDrive up and running, but do you know when the next stable release for DrivePool is going to be? It seems I've been running on 2.1.1.561 forever but I'd rather not roll my dice with the Betas.

Thanks!
