DrivePool not Balancing

$

Good Morning!

I'm running DP v. 2.2.0.651 on my WHS 2012r2 Server, a 49.6TB pool. Recently I added two drives, a 6TB, replacing a damaged 6TB drive, and an 8TB.

The system properly added the duplicate files to each drive, but didn't go back and re-balance. I have the balancing settings as "SB Scanner" priority one, then "Volume Equalization" as number two. Figured that should be causing it to balance (It's set to balance immediately, with 10GB as threshold, we're way past that.)

Any thoughts, or ideas on how to get it to work? Everything is still working great, just trying to keep things tuned up.

Thanks-

-Andy

Understanding non-duplicated files

Where exactly are these files stored? I've pooled my D, E and F drives together. It's saying the unduplicated files are on my E drive. What happens if I disconnect my drive? Will I lose these files or are they actually written on my E drive?

Questions: DrivePool and Adding HDD's

I've been running my first server (a Gen8 w/ WHS2011) for about a year and I'm about to add a 4TB Red to the rack (along with the existing 60GB SSD and 2TB Red) (see image attached).

Server Drives.png

So I decided to get DrivePool so I can consolidate all my files into the one place when I add the new drive.

My questions are as follows:

  1. What is that (D:) drive? It's always been there...
  2. What's the best way to "move" everything from (F:) into the DrivePool (E:) and switch the mapped letters so that I don't have to change any file paths?
  3. Can I "move" everything from the SSD (C:) into the DrivePool and get the software to recognise that program files need to remain on the SSD and not get balanced to anywhere else?
  4. How do I add the new drive when I get it? Is it just plug-and-play?

Can't wait for feedback. Thanks, Watson.

Why is duplication inefficient?

Say I have drive A. There is 5TB in the cloud and 100GB cached locally. I add drive B and turn on file duplication with 2 copies (one on each drive). Why does Drivepool immediately start to download data from the cloud (slow) to duplicate to drive B? Wouldn't it make more sense initially to duplicate anything that already exists in cache (locally) on drive A?

Adding mounted VHD files

I have tried unsuccessfully to add mounted VHD's to a new or existing pool.  I am currently using v2.2.0.734.

I don't want to take a performance/cache hit by using CloudDrive to make shares on my NAS available, so I created and mounted a VHD file from there.

"\\nas\root\disk01.vhd"

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Chris

Help me make the right decisions

Hi all

Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully lend me your expertise. I recently discovered this great application that does exactly what I have been looking for and since then have been putting together a plan to migrate from my ageing HP N54L Microserver running unRAID to something else.

I have a gaming rig/HTPC that sits under the stairs and is more than powerful enough to handle anything I throw at it. It sits idle 95% of the time and is always on so I was wanting to consolidate the Microserver and this rig into one. The motherboard in the HTPC is an MSI Z97i Gaming AC which has 2 x eSata ports. I am trying to find out if these support port multipliers or not. I have read on a forum that NO Intel Sata supports PM but I have not seen anything concrete on this so I am hoping you guys can clarify.

Takes me to my next point. If it doesn't I will need an add-in card. Seen one or two but they seem to support a max of 5 drives per port? The specification seems to support up to 15 disks, I only need 8!

The reason I need 8 is because I plan on using an IcyBox IB-3680SU3. This supports 8 disks via either USB3.0 or eSata. It only has a single eSata port so if I want to address all 8 disks I need a port capable of doing so. I have read on these forums that USB3.0 is not the way to go for long term storage and which is why I am looking at eSata instead. Does anyone have experience with this unit, good or bad?

Anyway, that's my chain of thought pretty much written down. Look forward to hearing your thoughts :)

the operation cannot be completed because the disk is full

Hello, I have been using Drive Pool for a bit now and love it. However, I started running into this issue recently when copying mkv files across the network to the Drive Pool machine. It will copy all the way to the end then give this message: "the operation cannot be completed because the disk is full". The pool is not full it has 9.2 TB available below are some screenshots to show this. Any idea what might be causing this issue? Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Always Keeping Each Movie on Single Drive?

$
0
0

I'm considering setting up DrivePool but have a few questions before I try the product.

My NAS currently has about 8 drives full of BDMV Bluray disc backups.  Each drive has a Movies folder which contains individual folders for each movie using the movie title as folder name.  In each movie's folder there is a BDMV folder containing the movie's files and folders for menus, extras, and parts for branching titles.  As an example, it looks like Movies->Title->BDMV->Random_Movie_Files_and_Folders.

1) When you play a single movie, it may access several files over the course of the movie.  Is there a way to setup DrivePool so that it keeps all of the files inside each movie's "Title" folder on a single drive?  The reason I need this features, is because I don't want the movie player to pause in the middle of a movie while it's waiting for some drive to spin-up from suspend.  If all the files are on a single drive, it will spin-up once and stay running until I'm done watching the movie.  Most drive pooling software out there would spread the movie across all drives and would cause constant pauses while drives with specific files are powered up.

2) Assuming DrivePool can do what I want, how much micro-management will be required?  When I'm adding a new movie folder under Movies/, will it keep the files together automatically or do I have to go back later to tell it to keep that specific Title folder on a single drive?  Will I have to wait while it does maintenance to move the files to a single drive or can that be done the very first time I'm filling the pool drive with this new TItle folder?

3) When I'm accessing the pool drive main directory at Movies/, will DrivePool spin-up all of my 8 drives in order to display the top-level Titles in the folder?

4) Can I delete a movie title folder from the pool drive directly or do I have to find the specific drive the folder is on and delete it manually?

Thanks.

Drive pool duplication/ raid 1?

Current goal is to use cloud-drive with cloud pool, when I make a pool with two 100TB drives with duplication on it shows that I have 200TB Free when in reality it should be 100 since it will be making two copies of everything right?

Is there a way to make it to where it will only show 100Tb while duplication is on?

I was also wondering if there was a way to not have my cloud drives mounted to a drive letter but also have them in a drive pool?

Issues copying ~10TB with rsync

I'm having an issue copying data to my drivepool and it's really starting to annoy the crap out of me.

I have about 10TB of stuff on a ZFS pool that I'm trying to move to my drivepool.  I'm going about this by mounting my share which is my drivepool on my linux pc where my ZFS pool is, then using rsync to copy everything over through the mounted share.

Here are the options I'm using in rsync:

rsync -av --no-links --no-compress --progress --stats --partial /zfs-pool /drivepool-share

While watching it everything seems to copy fine, I'm typically copying at about 110-120MB/sec which would make sense given my gigabit home network.  While watching the drivepool UI I see similar write speeds.

Then out of left field rsync will start showing impossible copy speeds for my network, like 300+ MB/sec.  I look at the drivepool UI and there will be very little disk activity.  I browse the folders in my drivepool and as I suspected nothing is being written, despite what rsync --progress is reporting at the moment.

Every file will continue like this, rsync will tell me it's copying everything at impossible speeds, nothing will actually be copied then rsync will complete like it's finished.   If I wait a few minutes and restart rsync it will pick up where it left off in the actual copy process and continue on actually copying the remaining files like I want for a random length of time before this happens all over again.

I thought maybe the SSD optimizer was causing this, and when my SSD was getting full and being dumped into the archive drives, rsync was bugging out.  I have disabled all balancing options and this still continues.  I sincerely doubt it's an issue with my network connectivity so I'm at a loss here, it's taking me several days to copy these files when it should have only taken me the better part of a day.

Any suggestions?

Server 2016 Essentials and "Server Folders" Not Seeing DrivePool

$

When trying to move a server folder to the pool, it doesn't display the DrivePool disk.

It shows all the physical disks.

I searched and didn't see anything noted or posted regarding this in 2012 or 2016 Essentials.

It's otherwise working fine.

Has anybody else come across this, or a way to "fix" it?

So it looks like you can't move existing system-generated "Server Folders" to GPT partitions.

You can move existing system-generated folders to an MBR disk.

You can create a new share on a GPT disk.

2.2 Beta vs 2.1 Official

I'm not sure what new features are available in the proposed 2.2 release. Is it worth upgrading now to the latest 2.2 beta?

Will CoveFS ever support USN Journaling. This would make pool drives fully usable by the wonderful "Everything" search program.

Many thanks for suggestions and answers.

Baffling behavior after booting with a flash drive still in

$

So I did my periodic OS drive backup and set things to reboot after backup is complete and went on about forgetting about my server for a while.

My setup: 5 x 3TB drives (D-H) Mounting to Drivepool V:

2 Drives are on the motherboard's 2xSATA-III ports and 3 drives are on an add-in SATA-III card.

I come back and lo and behold - I have an additional Drivepool drive (I:) with 1 drive (G:).

My usual drivepool (V:) drive with a missing drive (G:) and it's stuck in read-only mode (par for the course when missing a drive).

and

The inability to extricate my G: from the imaginary I: drive and my complete bafflement as to why the heck this happened.

G: now has 2 unhidden drivepool-part folders and one hidden... Drivepool I: really really didn't want to let go of G: for some reason.

Logically the flash drive temporarily bumped the G: drive out of place before the OS could re-arrange the drive letters back to normal.

Drivepool panicked and created an additional pooled drive and I got a mess of drives and a bit annoyed at the whole thing.

Eventually after several attempts to Remove, Force Remove, remove some more Drivepool completely locked up/crashed, I rebooted sans-flash drive and everything came back with Drivepool re-scanning the drives, probably also asking "What the Heck Just Happened?!" but at least it's working.

Maybe you guys and reproduce this (it should be easy enough) and figure out a better way to handle it?

Hopefully this doesn't come off too ranty. I love this product and recommend it to everyone who's thinking about RAID, but really just needs a JBOD with a hand full of folders protected. But I do feel that some amount of frustration should be conveyed.

8 port sata card for Windows 10

Hello,

I need add a 8 port sata card on my plex server, im using Windows 10.

I looked at Supermicro card, but the product page dont say anything about Windows 10 drivers.

Anyone know a stable 8 port sata card, compatible with Windows 10  and with SMART support and allow drives save energy (stand by)? Im using StableBit DrivePool and Scanner.

I dont need RAID, just HBA.

I know about the M1015 cards and similars with same chip, but these card need firmware crossflash and I do not want to stay depending on whether an update works or not, I prefer a solution plug-and-play.

Any advice?

Thank

File Placement for New Drives

$

I have added a new drive to my pool, and I can't seem to get DrivePool to reshuffle the files to use the space evenly (for balancing).  I have tried ticking the "When a new drive is added to the pool, files matching this rule should be placed on that drive" but it doesn't stay ticked.

How can i:

1.) Force a re-balancing pass, and

2.) Have DrivePool re-balance all my files to use the new disk?

It should be mentioned I've noticed new files do get written to the disk as expected when using the pool.

This is version 2.2.0.651 Beta running on Windows Server 2016 Standard.

EDIT: I was able to get this to behave how I want via the "Disk Space Equalizer" plugin.  I'm still curious why I can't tick the option I mentioned above, though.

DrivePool drive letter moves on drive install

I have done some looking on this and have not found an answer so I thought I would ask...

I have DrivePool setup as the 'D:' drive on my system.  Anytime I add a new drive it takes D: and moves the pool to the next available location.

Is there a way to lock D: so that it will not move (makes a mess of any shares) or is the only option to move the pool up to a higher letter where it will not get bumped?

Thanks...

I upgraded my HP Microserver running Drive pool and windows 8.1 to a Dell T20 running windows 10

I enabled the administrator account

I added my own account as a local admin and made sure I was in the admin group ( same username as before)

I have the same account on all my PC's and the same password.

After installing windows 10 on the new machine I installed drive pool and scanner

I then transferred the pool and Drive pool found and balanced all the drives.

I can TS onto the server using said account on all my machines around the house.

From My Gaming PC I browsed to \\server\X$ and get a "Enter Network Credentials pop up.

I add my username and password but this just appears I try again and it just appears again

m39dHLH.jpg

When I log in as administrator as above.. I can connect to the share \\server\X$

Why can't I connect when I user is in the administrators group? But the administrator account can?

Anyway I took a look at the permissions of X and Both my user and administrator had full control and the owner was administrator

I clicked "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and get this error for some of the folders in the share

I want to be able to access the share from my user account from any PC in the house

Filesystem on a drive within the pool

Hi,

I have drivepool 2.1.1.561 running on WHS2011. Its been stable but have had a few problems with WHS lately. Anyhow noticed the box was offline and had to restart it. While I see the virtual drivepool disk and can navigate the filesystem when I go to each of the individual disk I see no filesystem. If I recall, it never use to be like that.

Is there something up that I need to fix?

Thanks

Does DrivePool use the recyclebin. Finding missing data.

$

I recently started to test out DrivePool with Snapraid.  I was previously using traid and kept having issues with it.  All I want is to use Drivepool for the pooling only and snapraid for the security.

I first started to migrate old data into DrivePool.  I ended up using the troubleshooting to reset to try and ensure it moved it registered all the data properly before running snapraid.  I thought it said it did not touch balancing options but after remeasuring the drive it started to balance.  I stop the balance, went in and disabled the balance and then hit remeasure again.  Afterwards one drive kept showing 64 gigs of other.  This was not the case beforehand.  Before all of this there was only 36 or so gigs free.  After some searches, I started to try and locate the files that weren't in the pool folder.  I deleted the recycle bin, which I have disabled globally, and it freed up 64 gigs of space which should had been data.  Now the drive shows over 100 gigs free.

My question is, does DrivePool use the recycle bin to balance, duplicate or any of its other features?  If so, I guess that means I screwed up and lost 64 gigs of unknown data?

It is late and I am about to pass out so forgive me for grammar and poor penmanship.

Thanks in advance.
