SSD as cache/seeder disk with no realtime duplication enabled.

I'm moving my drivepool setup from default settings to an SSD cache/seeder disk that accepts files from the network and feeds the hard disks later, also the realtime duplication will be disabled since there's only 1 ssd in the system and manually set the time to duplicate at night, what are the recommended settings for such a setup?

Modified time stamps messed up?

So after restoring my data from a HDD loss (covered here: http://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/2037-scanner-didnt-find-my-2tb-red-was-going-bad)I noticed a weird issue with my music library.

I restore the whole library to an external drive using CrashPlan and then I copied the directory to my drive pool, overwriting all existing files. Everything seemed all nice until I added a new album to one of the sub directories. Subsonic wouldn't find anything and after some troubleshooting with the developer it was discovered that the modified time was not being updated on the parent directory.

Here is how the library is laid out:

E:\ServerFolders\Music\<artist>\<album>

When I add a new file or directory inside an <artist> directory, I expect the modified time of the <artist> directory to also update.

I was able to force a timestamp modification by running the following in powershell:

$update = get-date
Set-ItemProperty -Path E:\ServerFolders\Music\ -Name LastWriteTime -Value $update

This is only a simple band-aid since the timestamp won't be updated the next time I add another album.

The REALLY weird thing is that it seems to be inconsistent. Like some directories update just fine while others do not.

Is there some kind of NTFS flag that needs to be re-set? How can I even start troubleshooting this?

Here is my server setup:

Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

Core i5 3570K @ stock speed

16GB DDR3 RAM

OS drive:

Sandisk 120GB SSD

E:\ Storage Pool:

1x 8TB RED

I don't know what is happening, maybe a recent AV update but my server crash when I access some share folders.

The first time I did noticed it, I was doing some work on Photoshop, tried to save my file so it opened the last used folder, witch was on the server share and photoshop was kind of frozen.

I tried to remote desktop to rhe server and noticed it has just rebooted.

Whent to event log, a dmp file was created and few errors related to DrivePool.

I tried to read the .dmp and it says it can't load symbols covefs.sys.

Here are log events :

 Event 1 :

BitLocker

I noticed that trying to encrypt the drives individually it reports an error most likely due to the act would mess up the Pool. However I also noticed that the option is missing from the context menu when clicking on the Pool itself. So I was wondering when/if DrivePool will be compatible with BitLocker? Or should I just opt for a 3rd party solution?

2 drivepools ?

I have converted 15 x 2TB disk WHSv1 to Drivepool under Windows 2012 Server R2

All the files were duplciated

Initially all worked fine until one day 4 disks all showed up as  damaged

Also some of the disks were not being recognized by the OS at startup

So I physically removed the affected disks and have recovered most of the data on another computer using 4tB drives

In many cases I can find nothing wrong with the disks which makes me think it is something else causing the problem

I believe it is most likely the PSU - I was only using 450w which was probably having trouble in the initial spin up

I have since ordered a replacement 650W PSU

To prove my point I thought I would add one of the damaged disks back to the pool to see if still showed as 'damaged'

Since I was planning to rebuild the pool I created a new directory on the disk and moved the files there
I then deleted the drivepool directories - I know, I should have logically removed the disk from the original pool

When I reloaded this disk to the drivepool machine drivepool created a second drivepool with a single disk

I then tried removing the disk from the drivepool which did not seem to work - no errors!

How can I

1. delete the second drivepool without losing data?

2. better still, recreate my drivepool from scratch?

Also, please confirm a disk is marked as 'damaged' by stablebit scanner if there is one or more bad sectors which may or may not affect a file. Note when I inspected the 'damaged' disk on my second computer SMART showed no errors.

And can I add a disk with data to Drivepool as per the WHS v1 stablebit initial disk load -

1. add the disk to create a logical stablebit Serverfolders directory.

2. stop the drivepool service

3. move the data files into the Serverfolder

4. restart the service

Pool Drive Letter Properties

Is the DrivePool pooled drive letter, in effect, a mapped network drive?  The reason I ask is that I've been having trouble lately with My Movies, where drive X:\serverfolders\videos (X: being my pooled drive) shows up in My Movies logs rather than the UNC path of \\servername\videos.  My Movies Support thinks that it might be because of the DrivePool setup http://www.mymovies.dk/forum.aspx?g=posts&m=204363#204363.  Of course, I've been using DrivePool and My Movies for years; however, maybe some database glitch has brought a problem to the surface that involves this issue.

'Other' files in the pool

Hello,

I've recently chucked 3 disks into a new pool, 2 of which had a load of data on. I moved the data into the pool by cutting and pasting it into the PoolPart.xxx hidden folders which I understand should 'work' instead of moving them into the logical drive. However, drivepool is now reporting 2.21TB of unduplicated data, and 3.13TB of other data. When I go to the pool logical drive and select all files/folders to check their size in properties, it gives the total size as 5.32TB.

I thought Other represented files not part of the pool, and yet they appear to be part of it in the logical drive. Does anybody know why this is happening?

Thanks for the help.

Drive pool showins as removable drive

Hi,

I noticed my antivirus and Windows 10 is showing the pool as removable.

I did a fresh install of Windows 10, and i dont remember what it was showing as on windows 7.

Using the wiki, i did create a file copy called "DrivePool.Service.exe.config" and added in this value, which said was default anyways:

            <setting name="CoveFs_IsDiskRemovable" serializeAs="String">
                <value>False</value>
            </setting>

However, it still shows as removable.

Does it really matter if its removable or not? I would prefer it was not showing as removable USB storage. This is 8 hard drives running off an IBM M1015 with IT mode firmware.

I dont install anything to it, but do backup to it and may install from it.

I am still learning Windows 10 and wasnt sure if it is windows or the default M1015 driver Windows installed.

Thanks.

Drivepool Not balancing correctly

Drive pool used to be balanced correctly for the longest time. Then I added a few more drives and it's gone downhill since. No matter what I try to do, it won't balance the drives evenly. I checked logs and didnt see any errors. I tried resetting all balance options to default as well as turning all plugins off except disk space equalizer. No luck. Drivepool obviously sees the balance issue but when I tell it to rebalance, it just immediately stops and continues saying that it is unbalanced. Any help?

Error Removing Drive: The system cannot find the path specified

$

I recently added to the pool a WD Blue 6TB. A few problems happened: my system would freeze for a minute or so very often, and some files got corrupt or missing. Stablebit Scanner also warned that the drive was damaged as it couldn't read a large portion of it.

I decided to remove the drive from the pool, but can't. Both normal and "force damaged drive removal" options fail with the error "Error Removing Drive: The system cannot find the path specified".

I'm on Windows 10 and on Stablebit Drive 2.2.0.651 beta. The hard drive in question is empty apart from the hidden poolpart directory, which contains 6.46 KB on 4 Files and 10 290 Folders according to folder properties.

What do? Should I try to format it, chkdsk it, just remove it... ?

Missing Balancing Tab in Drive Pool 2.2 beta?

Just completed a rebuild of my WHS2011 platform - and installed Drive Pool v2.2.0.651BETA, instead of returning the the version 1 module.

For the life of me, I don't see any tabs to access and configure the balancing settings.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Replacing bad drive in pool

I have a NAS (Windows 10) with two data drives E: and F: in drive pool G:. Both drives are 3T, there is plenty of open space.   All files on drive E: are duplicated on drive F, about 500G.  Note: OS and program files are on drive C:  E: died.  So, I am ready to replace drive E:, but want to review steps

Remove old drive via Drive pool.

Add in new drive via Disk Management as E:

Add to pool via Drive pool.

Copy duplicated files back to new drive E:

Configure duplication for E: to F: via Drive pool

Is this the correct procedure?  Anything else that needs to be done?

DrivePool data reported to Covecube?

$

I've recently purchased DrivePool to start replacing MS StorageSpaces and have been playing with it in various forms to get used it it's features. I setup a simple 3 drive USB pool, loaded it with a few files, and attempted to transfer it to a test laptop running a trial version to see how the pool moves in practice.

Within a period of time it told me I had to transfer my license to said machine to continue to use the trial. If I blocked all communication via the firewall, the message would not pop up.

While I have no issue wanting to protect the trial and keep people from mis-using it, it made me wonder what DrivePool (my purchased copy) is reporting back? Is my pool uniquely identified and stored somewhere offsite that is referenced for other uses? I ask this mostly for a security/privacy standpoint.

Is this Placement rule possible?

$

Hey guys,

I was wondering if this set of rules is possible:

1. Place all new and existing files in Folder AA to drive 1. Other files and folders can also go into Drive 1, but ALL files in Folder AA must go to drive 1.

2. After Drive 1 fills up, remove files/folders as needed to accommodate new files being placed into Folder AA.

3. Adhere to the drive fill up rule of Ordered File Placement plugin. The only rule this plugin has is to fill up drives consecutively instead of evenly.

4. Adhere to Stablebit Scanner rule of removing files on problem drives.

I can't seem to get all 4 of these working together. Any help would be appreciated.

Is it possible to migrate from PoolHD to DrivePool in W10?

$

Team,

I am current running (or was ...) PoolHD with one Drive Pool containing two physical disks. That Drive Pool contained two top level directories: "Duplicated" and "Non Duplicated" i.e. PoolHD balanced the non duplicated files across both disks and the duplicated files, duplicated across both disks.

I have now upgraded to W10 and PoolHD no longer works - I expected this, as it is not supported in W10 - and I had always intended to migrate to DrivePool because Windows Storage Spaces requires the drives (that are to be added to a Storage Space) to be cleanly formatted, and of course, I can't do that, because the drives contain data.

Now, just like DrivePool, PoolHD stores the files in standard NTFS directories - and even gives advice on how to migrate from DrivePool to PoolHD by changing directory names to match the DrivePool naming conventions.

Before purchasing DrivePool, I have downloaded a trial and have created a new Pool, but DrivePool will only add physical disks to the DrivePool pool, that have not previously been in a PoolHD pool. i.e. DrivePool doesn't see the two physical disks that were part of a PoolHD pool, even though both the drives effectively only contain a standard NTFS file structure and PoolHD is uninstalled.

Remembering that I effectively have two physical drives that contain two top level directories - one which balances the contents of that directory across both drives and the other (the duplicated directory) that has identical content on both drives, how can I add them to a DrivePool pool?

[Note: I guess that the secret is in the naming of some directories in the root of each drive, that indicates to DrivePool that it should steer well clear, but these are only directory names, so quite happy to edit them as necessary.]

Thanks in advance,

Woody.

Upgrading to Windows 10?

Im contemplating upgrading from Win 8.1 to Win 10, any gotchas I need to be aware of?  Im hoping to do a clean install of Win 10 on my server vs. an upgrade.  So I would need to reinstall DrivePool.  Do I have to deactivate it first (no hardware is changing, just OS).

And will it pickup my drivepool drives and settings from the CoveFS and Poolpart folders themselves or is there someting I need to do to "migrate" the pool itself after reinstall it on the fresh Windows 10 install?  (the OS drive will be reformated but its not a part of any pools).

Folders Not Showing up in Windows File Explorer

$

So, I have been having this weird thing happen to my pool lately.

I have 5 hard drives in one pool with no duplication set. I use the combined pool for movies, TV shows, Music, and 3D movies for Plex.

Lately, when I add movies in the movies folder in the pool, I am unable to find it using File Explorer. No matter what I do ( show hidden files, show hidden operating System files) it still will not show up.

The only way I am able to see the folder(s) I just added is by searching for it. It will show me the folder in the search result, but if I right click and click show containing folder, again it does not show up.

As a result plex is also unable to find the folders to notice a new movie has been added.

This is where it gets weirder. If I add TV shows to the TV shows folder, or music, I am able to see them in File explorer and Plex finds it too.

And in some cases I am unable to find the folder or it's content at all.

Please see attached pictures.

Is there a solution for this?

Thank You.

A few questions regarding Drive Pool and Cloud Drive together

$

Hi !

I was wondering, if Drive Pool and Cloud Drive in conjunction would support the following scenario:

If I install both on a notebook with an attached home based 8 TB USB Drive and the USB drive is being duplicated to a Cloud Drive of the same size and I later detach the notebook from the USB drive and go traveling, would ....

- the drive Pool still offer me access to all the files of the USB drive via the Cloud Drive without constantly reporting errors that the USB drive is missing?

- will it save new files to the Drive Pool while I am on the road and later add the missing file to the USB drive automatically once I am back home and the USB drive is attached again?

- delete files from the USB drive once its attached again, if I deleted them from the cloud drive while on the road?

Anything else I would need to be careful about in such a scenario? Like possible drive/data corruption etc?

Also ... if the USB drive was a network drive in the above scenario, would that also work or does it only work with local drives?

Thanks for answering ;)
Alex
