Is it OK to do this:
1. Turn off PC
2. Remove a 1TB HDD
3. Copy the PoolPart folder from the 1TB to a new 6TB HDD
4. Insert the 6TB HDD to PC
5. Turn on PC and Remeasure in DrivePook
6. Use the 1TB HDD to stabilize an uneven table
Thanks

If i have a DrivePool with 2x duplication, and it is serviced by two USB hard-drive towers. Naturally for best performance (only USB2 on the PC) it would be ideal to have all the originals on one tower and the dupes on the next. Is there an easy way to make it work that way?
Thanks
At first, I thought it was some strange windows permissions error with Linux and samba, but now I'm not so convinced.
I am able to read all the files but I could not change anything on the drive, or change owners. Every time I did it claimed permission denied.
Since I could still back up my files I had planned to break the pool and format the drives and see if that would fix the permissions.
During that process, I decided to give some of the other drives letters so I could directly see the data in the pooled drives. I was able to modify and make changes to the files leading me to believe there is some problem with drive pool.
The physical drives are formatted with REFS which I know is in beta support while the pool is NTFS.
I'm guessing this prob h as something to do with it.
Do you plan on supporting REFS anytime soon? I'd hate to break this all down and switch over to freenas on a VM for my storage.
I've finished migrating all my drives to ReFS V3.2 but the Balancer has now filled drives leaving 0B Free (and I know bad stuff happens). I can not get the Balancer to free up some room on these full drives. Attached are some Screen Shots of my setup. I'm on 2.2.0.798 Beta. The Setup I'm trying to achieve is:
- Fill up the 7 Drives in Order
- 1 of these drives is a HGST 8TB 7200 (d232f). Any data can be placed on this drive
- 6 of these drives are Segate 8TB Archive Drives and I only want them to have media so have added file placement rules to exclude some directories so they should reside on the HGST only.
When I run "Re-Balance" it goes through each drive, reaches 50% says it is building lists then immediately finishes without moving any files.
I've had this issue before, and had to move data out manually but I presume I've got DP configured incorrectly. Any ideas?
Thanks
Nathan
When you change the duplication from 1x to something else, and DP proceeds in placing duplicate copies of files onto other drives, does it use hash verification to ensure that the duplicate copies truly match the source files?
I recently added/removed/replaced some of the drives in my pool with some shucked 8TB WD REDs.
Prior to this, there was only duplicated data with less than 1k of unduplicated data.
Now, though, I have 13.6GB "Other" data.
No data is written directly to a disk. They were formatted, added to the pool, and drive letter removed.
All data is configured with at least 2x, with some files at 3x duplication.
Previously, when I had 11 drives, it was reporting around 2TB "other" data and a bunch of unduplicated. I get re-running "balance" but it did not do anything and continued to report "consistency" issues.
I removed that drive, and it seemed to go back to showing all data was duplicated.
Also recently, I occasionally have issues deleting files via Plex or Windows; I get a permission denied.
Regardless, even with that error, sometimes when (attempting) to delete via Windows, despite the error, if I refresh the Explorer window the folder disappears.
Well, it disappears from Explorer, but it's not actually gone.
But then a couple/few minutes later I am able to delete it; so not an actual file permission issue.
It also seems that it's more frequently "checking" the pool.
I've been running DP for 8 months, and it seems these issues were not persistent prior to my pool getting to >40TB.
I'm running the latest GR, 2.1.1.561
Also, whether or not it's relevant, after I removed the old 2TB WD Green drives, they all had 2 PoolPart.??? folders. Though it doesn't appear that any of my current drives do (spot-checked half of them)
So the specific drive i'm trying to remove is a good drive. I've removed other drives in the process (and added them back) and i haven't had any issues. I've tried to reboot several times but that hasn't fixed my issue. Generally the 1st time i try to remove the drive i will get the error in the attachment. If i try again (until i reboot) i will get the following error "Error Removing Drive - The process cannot access the file because its being used by another process". Generally when i try to remove the drive i have chosen "Duplicate files later" option. I of course don't want to check the "Force damaged drive removal" since its not a damaged drive and i don't want to loose data. I have tried without selecting the "duplicate files later" option but it still fails.

Hello,
I change the "DrivePool_VerifyAfterCopy" to "True". How to enforce checking of the whole pool now?
I am going to verify the checksum of all the duplicated files. I use 3x duplication - what if one file will be different from the others copies? What if three copies will be different from each others?
Hi all, I have for years been slowly building adding drives to my Win10 NAS, seeking a silent HW option as well as simple to understand and recover once SHTF.
My setup today is:
Shuttle DS437T Celeron 1037U 1.8 GHz/16GB RAM/Intel SSD - Main unit (chosen for the many USB ports (8) mainly, and fanless design)
Windows 10 - OS
External 2.5" HDDs of various sizes - Storage
My long range plan is to move away from SS to Drivepool to get a more simplified setup in case of SHTF. For this I am planning to use Gnubee's (https://www.crowdsupply.com/gnubee/personal-cloud-1/) for my many 2.5 drives that are damn near silent, and have it be a iSCSI target on OpenMedia vault via a dedicated 100mbit switch. The Shuttle will therefore be a iSCSI initiatior, with drivepool holding it all together.
So my question is:
* Has anyone attempted Drivepool on iSCSI targets ?
- If yes, what was your experience ? What where the pros and the cons?
- What transfer speeds should I expect ?
Thanks!
A
Sorry for the rudimentary question but I searched around and couldn't find anything.
I have about 70TB of media that is all duplicated across 15 or so drives. This has worked beautifully for me for the last few years. The problem is I am getting to the point that duplicating all of this media is not really feasible (or needed) with my upcoming space constraints. I was thinking about blowing it all up and using unRAID but I think I have settled on continuing to use DrivePool along with SnapRAID.
My question is what happens when I disable duplication on my media? Will the space become immediately available? If that is the case my plan would be to drop duplication, remove two 8TB drives, and then use them for dual parity with SnapRAID.
Also, what other relevant settings would I want DrivePool to utilize to work the best with SnapRAID? I figure that once the drives are balanced I'd want new data to be sent to a single drive until it is full as to not have the media changing much slowing down the parity computation.
Any other thoughts?
Thank you!
Drashna, would I make my system explode if I did the following:
Create a Storage Spaces Array 8TB x 6 - give it a drive letter then add that to a pool with duplication?
My goal is to have a fast, striped array for my media that I can write/read from but have that array duplicated automatically to the other remaining 3tb, 4tb, and 6tb drives.
If that would work, then how would this work:
I add a mkv file to my D drive, then copy it to the Storage Spaces Array lettered drive (that is inside a pool). Would it then automatically duplicate via Drivepool to one of the other 3tb, 4tb, and 6tb drives?

Hi there,
I've been using Drive Pool on WHS2011 for a few years now and a few junctions between folders on the same pool. I've noticed that one of the junctions has disappeared and I cannot re-create it anymore. Other junctions are still there and working ok as expected. When trying to create new junction I'm getting an error message that an NTFS drive is required for this operation.
Anybody has faced similar problem before? How can I fix it? Is there a way to break the pool and recreate it? Maybe this would fix the problem?
Thanks,
Adam
I am getting a Duplication warning about files in use. However, I thought I had things setup on the folder in question to prevent duplication of the folder or any management of it.
I use CrashPlan and it seems while data is being written into the CrashPlan directory I get "File in Use" errors.
I have duplication off for this folder, I have it set in File Placement for Crash Plan to only be on one drive, yet I get the error. I also get the error on a System Volume Information folder which I would have thought DrivePool would ignore.
I also get a warning about data couldn't be moved because a suitable destination could not be found. However, we are talking about the drive I have Crash Plan using, it has like 4TB available on it.
What am I missing here? I don't want DrivePool to touch or manage the Crash Plan directory and I want data written directly to it.
BTW, I am using the SSD Optimizer plug-in but it seems looking at the disk performance area I only see Crash Plan going to the correct drive.
My WHS2011 server recently went through a Windows update. Somehow in the process one of the pool drives file system got corrupted. (The pool was set to duplicate all files prior to the issue occurring.) I tried to remove it but kept getting errors. It had 300+ GB of data on it previously but now shows mostly "other" data. Based on another post I downloaded and installed 2.2.0.798 BETA but still am unable to remove. I run with both Force options enabled, the progress bar shows a few percent complete (<10%) and eventually stops yielding an error message to run CHKDSK, which I have done multiple times but still cannot successfully remove the drive.
Is there any way to physically remove the drive and repair the pool? I have a backup drive that I can use to restore the data. I am tired and frustrated with spinning my wheels on this.
It's a minor thing, but something I've noticed since I switched over to DrivePool, when I first hit the file server, there's always a pause partway through displaying the share contents. It shows about the first 15 or 20 folders, pauses for a second or two, and then continues. I also see similar behavior in browsing at least some folders. I haven't been carefully tracking it, but I think it's probably folders with more stuff in them,
I never had this pause when I was using StorageSpaces, and haven't ever seen it with other things, so I'm guessing it's something to do with DrivePool. I suspect maybe it's building/presenting the virtualized filesystem?
Anyway, is there anything I can do to mitigate that? On the one hand, it's a small thing, it really doesn't affect me a whole lot. On the other hand, it is a thing I constantly run into, so it's one of those minor irritations that constantly occurs. I always get just a little bit paranoid about it because under other circumstances, it feels like behavior you get when a disk is starting to fail, i.e. retries go through (I've checked, disks are all good).
Thanks!
I am almost sure, I am missing something here, but since DP is working so flawlessly in general, I cannot recall if what I see is a problem from my side of the keyboard or from DP.
Did an upgrade to 2.2.0.798 BETA to solve a problem with being unable to temporarily remove a good drive from the pool, as stated elsewhere here in the forums.
After that, DP (re-)gathered all data and everything looked well.
Now, a couple of days and reboots later, I am seeing the effect, that some files are not accessible from the pool.
Explorer sees them, but opening gives an Error, that the file is not there.
I normally don't use the native drives, just the pool...after enabling the disks and accessing the pool-part folders directly, the files are there and can be accessed, as expected.
However, the problem with accessing the files via the Pool persists.
I issued the command to re-gather the pool information manually, several times to no avail.
Since when I enabled the native disks with drive letters, a large part is now shown as "other" instead of duplicated/non-duplicated...don't know if this is related though.
...what is the recommended procedure to get DP up to the correct state and functioning again?
I am on Win10-Pro 64bit BTW.
TIA,
Fred
I just started having issues with my WHS2011 build the other day after disconnecting everything dusting it all off and doing some much needed cable management but now that it looked good it stopped working go figure. So I decided to install WS2016E on there to give it a spin and it hasn't been the greatest experience so far my #1 issue is I can't get my pool to successfully balance it keeps randomly just resetting. One second it will be measuring nicely and the next it just starts over. I fear for my data and the only issue I can find in event viewer for disk is a reoccurring warning Event ID 153 (69 in the last hour). My setup is SSD for the system with 3x4TB internal drives 2x3TB and a 6TB WD Duo (The offending 153 disk) and an assortment of drives in 4x Mediasonic Probox's
Hi, I am still looking to expand my storage and am wondering if anyone has any experience with this enclosure ?
I was aiming for a fanless/silent box but it would cost me far too much and I would settle for this unit instead. I would probably disconnect the fan as it's not going to get used to that extent that it does need it.
Also, will Scanner be of any help ? I am not sure I will be able to see SMART..
Thanks!
Hi,
I'm using Drivepool together with a bunch of disks. After a longer power off period one of the HDDs is not recognized correctly (the used PC detects it as raw - another as NTFS).
I'm atm using testdisk to see what I can do to repair the MFT etc. and get the disk backup and running. However I would not like to keep unduplicated files on it (to leave it out completely I have not enough space). Is there a possibility to use this disk only for dupliacted stuff?
Any other proposals?
Thanks!
